The area

Address
Neighborhood: Sukhumvit
With a mix of shopping malls, hip bars and food stalls lining both sides of Thailand’s longest road, you’ll rarely encounter a dull moment along Sukhumvit. While the main road itself doesn't offer a lot in terms of entertainment, it's the adjoining 'sois' (alleys) where the magic happens. Popular spots are soi 11 for a lively night out, soi 4 for naughty nightlife and soi 21 for world-class shopping at Terminal 21. It's hard to cover everything this area has to offer in on day, so be sure to take your time. Sukhumvit is heavily congested with traffic during day and night, so getting from A to B is most convenient using the BTS Skytrain right above it.

I went to Q-Bar several times on my last visit to Bangkok, a little bit the trendy it crowd. Some days they have a special DJ and charge 700 Baht entrance fee. Drinks are pricy for Bangkok standards. But one thing that that felt really odd to me, the owner seemed to be a little biased. I went early one night, and it was not that crowded. The owner (I think a French man) would walk around and introduce himself selectively to certain people: white people and most of the girls. First time I thought it was a coincidence. Second time I was just wondering. But the third time I saw that, it could not be a coinicdence anymore. He would walk around and clearly introduce himself and shake hands only to white crowds and to all the girls.

After that I decided not to go there anymore, it was a little turn off to see this in the Land of smiles.

This is a nice bar on Sukhumvit Soi 11 in Bangkok. It used to be very hot & trendy when it first opened. Now it is somewhat tired and has been upstaged by newer 'more happening' clubs.

This place has been around for a while and has changed it's layout a few times. A very hit and miss venue located at the end of bustling Soi 11, with some nights just one big fun party and others a dull drinking den. Many big flash new clubs have replaced Q Bar as the place to be but at least this cosy venue has some character and encourages mingling. Arrive after 10pm, door charges varies with the choice of all you can drink for 500 baht (limited selection) or 100 baht with a free drink. The lively band gets into the swing of things with the help of paid dancers shaking their booty. Like many bars and clubs that cater for tourists this place attracts freelancers looking to snare a newbie. Many of these newbies find it hard to distinguish between between working girls and those just out for a bit of fun and gawk at crazy drunk farang. When this place closes, those who have missed out on an exotic liaison or just want to dance till daylight, head to the true den of iniquity and last chance club, Climax, located midway along Soi 11 under the Ambassador Hotel.

After much research, my friends are I reached the conclusion that Q Bar, and it's neighboring club, Levels, were the 2 nightclubs we would absolutely visit, given the glowing reviews and ratings which were provided by travelers.

What a disappointment.

My friend, male, but dressed up as a woman, was immediately told that the club did not allow ladyboys. In the background we noticed an individual who appeared to be very very distressed by the sight of my friend, shaking his head vigorously at the bouncer, indicating that we would not be allowed in. Despite this obvious sign, the bouncer still asked us for our Indian passports, took a while reading them, and then said "no" again.

We are 3 best friends who did 6 months of research in order to find the best places to party and sadly, both clubs let us down.

What is the problem, Q Bar ? Do you hate Indians, or are you homophobic ? As an Indian woman, I can safely state that some of my people DO in fact, go overboard and behave obnoxiously; however, everybody does not fit into the same box. We were 3 well-dressed, paying customers who were turned away for no good reason.

Disgusting attitude.

As your review is about Q Bar AND Levels I cannot speak for Levels as it is another venue with different owners different staff and different standards, so I am unsure at which club your male friend in a dress was rejected at and for what reason. As far as the accusation of us being racist towards Indians that is completely untrue and proof is readily available on our website as we have pictures of hundreds of Indians partying here regularly and have even thrown parties with some of the biggest Indian Dj's in the world and for many years have had a regular Dwali celebration at Q Bar. As far as hating Gay people many of our staff as well as our customers are gay for example one of our oldest and most cherished waiters who has been with since the club opened in 1999 is openly gay and we have also hosted parties with gay performers such as Gene Kasit from the Thai Band Futon . I apologize if you feel you were treated differently by our door staff but if your friend was dressed outrageously and acting overboard and obnoxious as you say so yourself we do reserve the right to refuse entry.

Used to go in Q bar a lot in the last 10 years.
The place was fun and friendly. The american owner David knew how to keep this place hipe but not too much. A very mixed crowd and friendly staff, glass were a bit expensive but very well filled. Great and friendly atmosphere.

Since this new group bought Qbar (and several other place in the area), everything is over :
No atmosphere.
Old staff all gone
Prices up
Empty most of the week
Poor management
A small but revealing detail of the new mentality:
In the past ,in the toilets, you had a pile of small towels to dry you hands...well it has been replaced with low standard paper tissue. This is a small example but everything went down this way....

Well , Unfortunatly Qbar is almost dead....
A perfect example on how to transform Gold into trash.....

Being a Bangkok native for over a decade, the wife and I decided to try out Q Bar for a change. The entry fee was 700 baht - which allows for 2nr free drinks - which is what we more or less expected. The bar was busy and had a decent vibe. We simply ordered two beers which were served in the bottle - but warm, as if they had not seen the cooler/fridge. I took a gulp and immediately told the waitress who called over the manager. The manager looked at the bottle, which was full to the neck of the bottle and immediately angrily asked why I had drunk so much. I was dumbfounded and said the bottle is full and my wife has not even had a drink yet. He argued rudely when I asked him for a refund and was pretentious, arrogant and the rudest bar manager I have ever come across. When outside after a few words and a calming down from one of his door staff - he gave us our money back. I have never encountered such disgraceful management in all my life and will not be recommending this bar to anyone.

I am one of the managers at Q Bar and I have spoken to our only 2 other managers and there seems to have been some misunderstanding. Regardless I do apologize if you feel you have been wronged by one of the management here. My Thai bar manager remembers this incident and this is his side of the story to be fair. He remembers you and your wife and tells me you did complain the beer was too warm and your wife did not touch hers. Please keep in mind on a very busy Saturday Night we are very crowded and we sell alot of Beer so sometimes it is not always the -9 that our vodka and beer freezer is set to. He said that he did mention he thought you had a very large "gulp" as you put it and that the bottle was not full. He also mentioned that he offered to replace your beer at no cost to you and asked your wife if hers was ok. He said she said she had no complaints. He says you refused the offer further complaining that it was no where near cold enough for you. He tells me he stated that he was sorry it did not live up to your expectations but he said you got increasingly angry over how it was not cold enough and he asked you to step outside where he refunded your money. He said he did not understand why you were so angry at him and gave you your money back. Considering that Q Bar has a No Refund Policy on door money this is very unusual and must have been something serious for him to give you your money back. Our policy is to take care of the problem with comp drinks or free entry but you were so furious that you demanded a refund so he gave you one. I know this may or may not be exactly as how you remember it but it does not matter. What matters is that we do apologize and offer you and your wife complimentary entry and a drink on me next time you come to Q Bar. Please just email me at Matt@qbarbangkok.com anytime and I will personally meet with you and do my best to make sure the beer is cold. We have been in business over 12 years and although we are far from perfect we do our best to make sure people have a good time.

Absolutely one of the best bars in the World! Alongside Bed Supper Club, this is where the action is. This bar/club is really where you wanna spend your time while in Bangkok.
No working girls.

I was partying in Soi 11 and just made a visit to Q Bar on a Friday night. This was one of my favorite hangouts the last 10 years. Really liked the design and easy going crowd. Drinks were a bit expensive, but music was good and there was always a lot of eye candy in a fairly hip crowd that made the trip worthwhile.

Unfortunately, not this time, Q bar was bloody empty and they had placed to go go girls right next to the DJ. The guest were 95% male tourist (like me ;-) that probably had not got the information that Q Bar is on its decline.

With Bed gone and Q Bar going, there will be only very mainstream Level @ Aloft. Soi 11 is less interesting, unfortunately.

Me and a group of friends decided to visit Q Bar recently. Upon entry we decided for a promotion of a Ciroc Wodka bottle with 10 mixers. Ordered 2 bottles for THB 3,500 each.
When the bottles came, two of our glasses were chipped badly. None of the mixers (Sprite, Soda, Shark, Tonic) were chilled. When we asked the waitress, she mentioned that there are no chilled drinks in the whole venue - is that true?!
Also, Red Bull was offered to us as a mixer. After we ordered, some tins of "Shark" came to our table. I am fine with another energy drink, however the staff should not sell Red Bull if is actually a different drink.
For two bottles we only got one (relatively small) bucket of ice. Since we had warm softs, all the space was taken to put the soft drinks inside on ice. The bottles hardly fit in there anyway.

The biggest disappointment: When I complained with the (actual friendly) waitress, she brought me to the "PR-Lady". The reaction to my complaint was an arrogant and snotty "You have never been out in Bangkok, right?". Since I live here in Bangkok, I go out 3-4 times a week, so I do know what I am talking about.

Moreover, I asked to talk to a manager of the location, who never arrived to our table.

The design is nice and the music decent. The open-air area upstairs is nice.

Have had much better experiences at Levels across the street and will prefer this club in the future.

Once upon a time, there was a shady coolness about Q Bar. It used to be "off the hook" in terms of atmosphere but over the last 18 months, it's become mired in a steady, inexorable decline that, I think, began when they moved the DJ booth to the centre of the main room, botched the redecoration, shoe-horned in another three or four bars and, more recently - undoubtedly at the behest of new part-owners, Eclipse Group - began reining in alcohol measures while hiking prices.

Regulars complain that Q Bar feels like it’s in the throes of a civil war with, on one side, the extremely capable manager who actually cares about music, atmosphere and customer satisfaction and, on the other, a faceless, soulless and clueless corporate hierarchy that doesn't give a monkey's about anything more than a return on an investment spent on the afore-mentioned ill-advised "improvements".

To be fair, Q Bar valiantly attempts to disguise the cold, hard, business-minded calculation that now hallmarks the establishment's operations by bringing over top DJs like the magnificent Dennis Ferrer and Ron Carroll but, just when you think you can look past the cynicism, you’re reminded of your "nothing-more-than-a-consumer" status when the power to the upstairs sound system is abruptly shut off 15 minutes before closing time leaving you to finish your weak, watery libation baffled as to what on earth is going on.

Anyone who’s been raised on REAL clubs in Europe, the UK or the US will quite rightly roar with laughter at any suggestion that Q Bar offers a genuine club experience because, put simply, it does nothing of the sort. If, on the other hand, you don’t get out much back home and just want a knees-up on your holiday and a gratuitous shag, Q Bar definitely fits the bill.

As you have noticed Q Bar has been in a transition period over the last year. Call it growing pains as we try to re-invent ourselves and find a place amongst the changing atmosphere of Soi 11. After 14 years, this little dark back soi which we helped to turn into a monster of Bangkok Nightlife is changing and many of the people who have helped to make Q Bar what is is are gone. That one manager who you call capable and honestly cares is still here after 12 years and is working with a completely new team (even newer than your post in March) Q Bar has consistently been a leader never a follower and we tried to follow for a little while to see what would happen with results that we were not happy with so we are getting back to basics and improving on what we do best. Drinks are back to 45mL pours. Cover Charge reinstated although half what it was before. International DJ's are on their way, Male dancers were sent packing. We urge you to try Q Bar again and when you decide to please contact us at Party@qbarbangkok.com and let us know when you will come thru. I hope we can convince you we are doing our best to bring the coolness back to the Q Bar and show you that change although inevitable is possible while still striving to keep the principles that made Q Bar one of the Worlds most popular bars.
