The area
Neighborhood: Sukhumvit
With a mix of shopping malls, hip bars and food stalls lining both sides of Thailand’s longest road, you’ll rarely encounter a dull moment along Sukhumvit. While the main road itself doesn't offer a lot in terms of entertainment, it's the adjoining 'sois' (alleys) where the magic happens. Popular spots are soi 11 for a lively night out, soi 4 for naughty nightlife and soi 21 for world-class shopping at Terminal 21. It's hard to cover everything this area has to offer in on day, so be sure to take your time. Sukhumvit is heavily congested with traffic during day and night, so getting from A to B is most convenient using the BTS Skytrain right above it.

The majority of Bangkok better hotels are located in this area, and clustered close together. Lots of shops, restaurants, cafes, bars, massage parlours, and seedy establishments. Beware if walking with young kids, some of the goods offered for sale by the street vendors would be rated XXXX. Likely lots of fake meds also being offered by street vendors.
Over the past ten years, the air quality has very significantly improved.

The Sukhumvit neighborhood was a lot like the USA. There were several US franchises in the neighborhood and all the little VW vans that sold food
We were told about were no longer there. They were required to leave we heard because of lack of licensing. Sad as one of the reasons we booked our hotel in the area was to experience them. Prices were higher than we had experienced earlier in a different part of Bangkok earlier in the trip.

Sukhumvit area is the center of business and tourists haven in Bangkok. There are many shopping malls and parks where you can shop, five-star hotels to stay in and fancy restaurants. If you are in a budget there are also affordable and clean hotels and hostels for only 500- 1,000 baht per night along Sukhumvit 22. Aside from that, Sukhumvit has a fantastic transportation connection via Skytrain, The Metro, and the Airport Rail Link.

I was so excited to visit Bangkok after hearing so much about it. But I wasn't expecting quite as much seediness. As I walked along the street lined with shops and tables selling all kinds of things I didn't feel comfortable at all even stopping to look at anything. The vendors latch onto you immediately and I felt targeted and greatly taken advantage of. I really liked the idea of seeing 'real' Bangkok so I gave this rating a 3 but I mostly felt sad to see the beautiful young women doing what they need to for money, and many Caucasian older men with significantly younger eye candy on their arms. One walk down the street was enough for me and I spent lots more time in my hotel room than planned.

Sukhumvit is a very big area with tons of shopping malls, restaurants, hotels and all those lanes and streets with residence, foods, and commercial buildings.
The traffic along the main Sukhumvit road can get super congested. BTS is recommended, it has stations all along the road.
Popular places for tourist such as Terminal 21, Nana, Thong Lor, Siam, On Nut are located in Sukhumvit.

It's a busy area in BKK. I stayed there and especially during night time it changes to a big party place. I was just walking around but if you wanna go to celebrate, here is the right place. During day time it's also interesting, as every street has its own touch. Explore it on your own was a good adventure.

Recently took a trip , just last December 27-31, 2019 to Bangkok, Thailand. We stayed at the Holiday Inn Hotel along Sukhumvit Rd, which happens to be the main road ( i think ) in the area. First Id like to commend the staff of Holiday Inn for being courteous , helpful and making you feel comfortable upon arriving the hotel . The lobby or should i say Front Desk is on the 9th flr where they have a lounge as well that serves cocktails daily from 6pm-8pm , aside from the free drinks of scotch, vodka , wine , sparkling wine and juices they also have a small spread on a buffet table of cheese , salami and different local dishes , just the right amount not to fill you up. For those that look forward to breakfast, .... STAY AT THIS PLACE, ( no need to elaborate ), Across the street from Holiday Inn you have a very good steak house (also recommendable) .further down you have a grocery /deli open 24hrs thats got good meat, a vast selection of wine and a lot more . Just a few more meters walk is your shopping malls thats got high end goods to affordable not to mention discounted items. Planning to visit Bangkok soon, stay along Sukhumvit and you wont go wrong.

There are many areas to stay in Bangkok depending on your needs. This was my favourite area. Some may find it busy and hectic but I loved the buzz! Good shopping malls, restaurants, bars and transport links to easily get around.

Is it better to exchange Gbp to Thai Bhat in Thailand?where in Sukhumvit can i go for street food?
Written October 29, 2018
Yes of course you can exchange any currency anywhere in Bangkok and mostly the currency rates do not vary. There are so many places to eat street foods in Sukhmvit and it also depends where your hotel is. but you can find street foods almost anywhere in Sukhumvit.

Can anyone recommend a good nail salon around Soi 33 please
Written July 29, 2018
Hi Jacky, yes I can.
In can recommend Nuch Massage on Soi 24 (BTS Phrom Phong). I’ve been coming here since 2011. They do a very good manicure and pedicure. Good prices (300 THB for mani or pedi as of April 2018) and hygienic. They use clean instruments for every customer. They mainly cater to locals (as in Thai with money to spend), but are tourist friendly.
No need to ask at hotels if they can fix you, as they will probably have their own spa with very inflated prices or recommend one that does the same.
Hope this helps you!

Why do you use this awful picture to represent Sukhumvit?
Please change it. Sukhumvit is a wonderful area to explore. It has much to offer both for both tourists and locals.
With so many interesting and attractive places I cannot fathom why you use such a, dare I say, ugly photo of a subway entrance to show people!
Written December 13, 2017
Sukhumvit is a wonderful area. I have never photographed anything in the area that I thought was "ugly." There are wonderful things to see and learn all along the Sukhumvit area. Ugliness is in the eyes of the beholder. Perhaps ugliness ideas come from within a persons own demeanor...

Hi, we are going to Bangkok in January for 24hrs stop over with 2 young kids. We will spend most of our time resting or doing short stroll around hotel. Is sukhumvit a perfect area for us to stay? If yes which hotel that is not too expensive and easy to get around? How many hours before the flight time to leave the hotel to get to the airport??
Written September 13, 2017
I wish you a wonderful trip. Yes, all along Sukhumvit are numerous shopping opportunities and department store areas, especially in the Sukhumvit 24 area where you will find Emporium and within many places to eat, watch movies, and much more. I recommend. Also, depending on the time, you should give yourself plenty of time to get to the airport, but know that there are mass transit systems such as Sky Train that could allow you to get out of the city to a place much easier to catch a taxi to the airport, such as going on Sky Train out to On Nut then taking a taxi, etc.. Just check the local information before deciding when you will leave and where you will catch a taxi. You could also use the Airport Train if it is operating... Check local listings...

what can we do here?.shopping for cheap clothes?.or branded?
Written April 18, 2017
If your planning on staying for a few weeks or more I would say to buy the cheaper clothes that the Thai people buy. But they also have some fab clothes that are quite a bit more expensive but they will last a lot longer. If you go back to the same store or open air market a few times you will find the owner will give you a discount bigger than the normal 10% they give everyone (if you asked for one). It also depends on how much money you have to spend.
