The area
Neighborhood: Silom
Despite the lack of any major tourist attractions, this lively neighborhood is a favorite of many. Whether it's the (somewhat naughty) nightlife of Soi Patpong, the various handicraft night markets or the plethora of dining options that tickle your fancy, a night out in Silom is a must on every itinerary. It's worth a stop during daytime, too: join office workers on a quest to tasty street food during lunch and shop at Silom Complex for a great mix of Thai and international stores. After a day of strolling around the congested sidewalks, a visit to Silom's Lumphini Park, Bangkok's answer to NYC's Central Park, is a welcome change of scenery.

On the third floor of a shopping mall selling mainly golf clubs, in a street full of strip clubs, is this lovely little shop selling traditional Thai handicrafts. There are presents for every budget, from woven drinks coasters to bronze statuettes. Well worth a visit, and easy to reach on the MRT or BTS.

I go to this place every time I visit Bangkok and on each visit I end up walking out with a huge bag of stuff. All of the stock is handmade and the quality is unbeatable. Each item is a treasure and unlikely to be found anywhere else. Lots of the goods are woven and for $2 you can get a lovely woven container that we the use for packaging gifts. And the packaging becomes a part of the gift. It is accessible from the Sala Deng Skytrain station and is worth the trip. Simply wonderful and creative items.

One of my favorite places for very high quality baskets and ceramics. I frequently shop there and take friends because the things are unique and beautifully made
