Address
Neighborhood: Sukhumvit
With a mix of shopping malls, hip bars and food stalls lining both sides of Thailand’s longest road, you’ll rarely encounter a dull moment along Sukhumvit. While the main road itself doesn't offer a lot in terms of entertainment, it's the adjoining 'sois' (alleys) where the magic happens. Popular spots are soi 11 for a lively night out, soi 4 for naughty nightlife and soi 21 for world-class shopping at Terminal 21. It's hard to cover everything this area has to offer in on day, so be sure to take your time. Sukhumvit is heavily congested with traffic during day and night, so getting from A to B is most convenient using the BTS Skytrain right above it.

I don't get it. Why is this place popular? I have never reviewed a bar on TA as I see little point and having consulted it for the first time to find this place, I can see it's not useful in the least. I feel like I had to post something just to balance out the bizarrely enthusiastic mob here.
There is absolutely nothing to recommend. It's an open front beer-bar like millions of others in the Sukhumvit area, but in this case without girls and in a quiet side street so nothing to see. Beer selection and prices are the same as everywhere else, although this one is very crowded with white people.
Unless people here just want to be with a lot of other white people (sitting outside with no a/c and next to a bunch of vegetation that provides swarms of mosquitoes) I am simply baffled why anyone would come.
The place isn't random - as there are thousands like it within a 15 minute walk in any direction - but the ratings and the enthusiasm certainly are. Why this place and not the 25 that you passed walking on the way to it. Maybe someone else can explain?

It's on a restaurant plaza beside Soi Sukhumvit 50, 400 meters from On Nut BTS station. Before Luea Suk Alley on the right. Opend 1 december 2017. Same atmosfeer as before only a bit smaller but room enough.

Cheap Charlies on Sukhumvit Soi 11 has a sort of cult following and I've never understood why. I first went there around 5 years ago and apparently it's been there for donkeys years. The toilet is the sort you would expect in a Zimbabwean prison, the prices are about the same as any other bar in the area and you sit outside in a cordoned off area where you are lucky to get somewhere to sit. No good for people watching as it's on a quiet soi just off Soi 11 so what is the point? My guess is because the expat crowd go there and it's a bar to be seen in.
Probably worth going for a quick beer early in the evening just to see the place but for some real fun there are hundreds of nearby bars where you will be a lot happier and get better value.

A fabulous little bar and a real Bangkok institution. A friendly place to have a cheap (and very cold) beer and watch the world go by. Fun expat crowd and always someone to have a chat with, One of my fav bars in Bangkok and the world! Family and I have been going here for over 20 years and are really sad to hear that it is being demolished to make way for new development. Soon there will be nothing left but high rise condos and rooftop bars. A real loss to Bangkok! Really hoping it can relocate.

After reading on Trip Adviser I decided to try this place ... it's awful, none of the staff smile or talk to the customers ... the place is very dirty. The toilet is a small box with a portaloo (very dirty) ... Seems to attract a few ex pats and English teachers. Really it's just a few tables and chairs in the street, the bar is a lean to on the side of a building. I won't be going back.

I dine there with my husband and was extremely dissappointent. I eat a lot of mexcican food and have not had such bad food. Taco lacked flavor and tasted like cat food. There was Thai women who brought their own food. I wonder why... Wish i would have done that.I also was dissappointed the restaurant did not offer draft beer. Hopefully the restaurant can make changes to attract people other than expacts who do not care about the qulity of food.

Exceptional. At the cheapest bar the most expensive experienses ever. Its gin and tonic rocks. I will definitely come again (and again and again...).

Basically a street bar made of wood with a few seats around it selling cheapish drinks depending on what your ink is. It's easy to miss as it is located slightly adrift of Soi 11 down a wee alley, so you'll have to keep a look for it. The few times we went there it was standing room only with an eclectic bunch of people from all over happy to pass conversation and good times resulting in a friendly and warm ambience. Good place to meet people as they're always up for a chat and a good place for a bunch of friends to get the night rocking early before heading to other bars nearby.

We had been frequent Charlie's patrons for many years. Since our last visit to Bangkok, the bar has moved out to the sticks and it is just not the same,
While part of the old facade remains, the atmosphere is very different.
Partly disappointing for nostalgic reasons, partly disappointing because it was just disappointing!

Used to pop in the old place at Sukhumvit 11 when in town. Most the time you could meet and old geezer with great stories when Bangkok was still wild.
The new place has still "cheap Charlie" prices and friendly service but now a younger generation patrons with boring stories about how successful they are.

HI. Can someone let me know when exactly the bar will be closed as definitely want to be there one more time. So sad that the whole area is about to change. Have met some amazing people over my visits and now so called progress is taking away the meeting place of so many people. Thanks in advance.
