The area
Neighborhood: Silom
Despite the lack of any major tourist attractions, this lively neighborhood is a favorite of many. Whether it's the (somewhat naughty) nightlife of Soi Patpong, the various handicraft night markets or the plethora of dining options that tickle your fancy, a night out in Silom is a must on every itinerary. It's worth a stop during daytime, too: join office workers on a quest to tasty street food during lunch and shop at Silom Complex for a great mix of Thai and international stores. After a day of strolling around the congested sidewalks, a visit to Silom's Lumphini Park, Bangkok's answer to NYC's Central Park, is a welcome change of scenery.

Wonderful cooking class

Had a wonderful private cooking class with Khun Koy. She’s a lovely patient teacher and taught me how to make the dishes I have been wanting to learn for years now. Relaxed, very clean and warm environment. Very reasonably priced and they were very flexible to my timings and what I wanted to learn as well. Definitely go here if visiting living in Thailand and have a passion for learning thai cuisine!

Fantastic cooking class!
Apr 2021 • Solo
I booked the afternoon class at Sompong Thai Cooking School and was lucky enough to have Koy the owner teaching me. The class was very informative, starting with the main flavours and ingredients of Thai food. We also went through how to tell if the different kinds of herbs and vegetables are fresh when buying them at the market.

The actual cooking was fun and we made four dishes - fried rice, tom yum soup, mussaman curry and pumpkin in coconut milk. Every step was well explained and we even went through examples of how things can go wrong. I was surprised that I managed to make a flower out of a tomato which is something that I never thought I could do!

At the end of the class the food was all nicely plated to have dinner at the school. They were also very helpful to pack up any leftovers so I could take them home and enjoy them later. The icing on the cake was that we got to take home a cookbook with even more recipes to try in future.

An excellent opportunity for learning authentic thai cooking.

This is a great experience for anyone visiting or living in bangkok, a wonderful half a day with a lot to offer and very clear explanation of what to cook with, as well where to get it!
Fai, my teacher for the day is easy to understand and answered everything I asked, leaving me confident to cook the same at home. I could not recommend this enough.

Fantastic Cooking Class!!
Nov 2020
I recently took a class at the Sompong Thai Cooking School, and it was an amazing experience.

(Full disclosure: I am a professional chef from the US and have worked at Michelin-star restaurants. I’ve also been an executive chef at my own restaurant so I understand the value of a quality teaching experience. I’m providing this review based on my real experience. I paid for my class as a regular student.)

Owner and chef Koy was brilliant. She was kind and patient while being detailed and thorough. She invited my questions. She was always reminding me to relax and smile.

Class started with a very fun and informative visit to the local market, where I learned about Thai herbs, spices, and vegetable varieties. She explained how to select the best ingredients and how to know when something was fresh or past its prime. I learned how coconut cream and milk is made. The market visit alone was worth the cost, as it allows you to shop the local fresh markets with confidence.

Back at the school, the instruction room is large and well-organized, with new, clean, quality equipment and sharp knives. Each ingredient and recipe step is explained. Technique is emphasized, which allows students to extrapolate their learning to other dishes beyond the day’s lesson.

Most importantly, you actually cook! Some schools are more like cooking demonstrations, where you watch the chef cook and then sample the dish. Others divide up the cooking jobs to create a group meal. Neither of those options will give you the ability to cook a meal at home.

At Sompong, you’ll actually prep and cook the entire menu, learning each and every step so you can take the full knowledge of the dish home to your own kitchen. They’ll teach you the delicate balance of sweet, spicy, sour and salty that makes Thai food so delicious and satisfying. And there is no MSG! Their recipes derive flavor from real ingredients. At the end of the class, you’ll have 4-course meal to eat, and you’ll inevitably have extra to take home with you.

In my opinion, one of the best things about Sompong is you will learn to make curry paste in the traditional way, with a mortar and pestle, pounding and grinding the ingredients into deliciousness. No more store-bought goo of questionable quality. Curry paste is a staple of the Thai household, and the ability to make it yourself is a major step toward being able to cook satisfying Thai food at home. (And yes, you can use your blender once you get home.)

Koy explains how to substitute for vegetarians and for ingredients that may not be easily found in your home country. You’ll also receive a quality recipe book with information on the building blocks of Thai food and dozens of recipes. The recipes are written in English and are easy to follow.

Beautiful, kind, talented people teaching delicious Thai recipes in a great setting. What a find! Book their courses with confidence. Don’t be fooled by other schools that promise more dishes or cheaper prices. Go to Sompong instead, and get the real experience of cooking Thai food from raw ingredients to final plating. I enjoyed the experience so much I booked another class for the next day.

Thai food is amazing! Do yourself a favor and have some fun learning how to cook a few dishes at home.

Wishing the Sompong crew continued success!

Anniversary Cooking Class
Sep 2020 • Couples
My wife and I had an amazing time. The place, the food, the instruction, the cookbook and everything was perfect. They were so generous they even gave us a wedding anniversary gift. I've been to other cooking classes before but this is the best one I've been to. I could recommend it highly enough, the food was delicious and the time flew by.

Great fun
Mar 2020
This trip was booked for 24 of us as we were in Bangkok to celebrate a family wedding. I would highly recommend this experience. Fai our teacher was brilliant at her job. She made learning about Thai cooking fun and she was great at explaining everything. We had a real laugh whilst being shown how to cook Thai food. The menu differs depending on what day you go and you get a Thai cook book to keep and take away with you. Before you even get to the cookery school they take you to the market to collect some of the fresh ingredients you will need to cook with. They explain what the vegetables and what kinds of herbs and spices you will be using and why. All in all a great fun and informative lesson and if you get Fai as your teacher you will definitely enjoy this experience as she I’d brilliant.

A unique experience in Bangkok!!!
Feb 2020 • Family
For those who regularly come to Bangkok and having the same routine (eating, shopping, temples), how about inserting something else into your itinerary?
Highly recommended. Interactive and hands on. A meal that is cooked by you that is so tasty.
The morning class includes the market visit too. A cookbook is given to you as well, which makes the price for this cooking class a steal. A cookbook outside in the bookstore would cost how much?
There is a reason why the reviews are so good. Do not hesitate and book now!!!

This place is amazing. The staff, the service, the menu, and the place itself - everything was wonderful. It truly felt like you are surrounded by people who love their job and are so happy to show you Thai cooking. I grew up making Thai food with my mom, so I wasn’t a stranger to Thai cooking. However, I still got several useful cooking tips I didn’t know before and an easy to follow recipe book!

The instructor was also entertaining and knowledgeable and they have several staff nearby waiting to assist you, answering your questions if you forgot anything. Everyone was so kind.

I dropped an egg and made a mess everywhere. They reassured me that it was not a big deal and it totally happened from times to time since the egg shell can be more fragile than at home. They cleaned it up right away and gave me new egg. I continued to dropped other things throughout the lesson and they were just so kind and reassured me that it’s ok and replaced my ingredients right away. Let me tell you that I’m just clumsy and it was completely my fault, but they just made me feel so well taken cared of.

The dishes we made were also better than restaurants or my mom who is a great Thai cook. Sorry mom! They made difficult looking dishes like Massaman curry so simple to follow.

In addition, the place itself is so pretty and super Instagram-ready. Every corner is picture ready. And...the staff is great at taking good photos for you. I’m sure you understand how important this is :)

Highly recommend this place for as a must-do while you are in Bangkok.
