Phra Sumen Fort on the banks of the Chao Phraya River is a brilliant place to relax and escape the madness of the busy Bangkok streets. The beautiful surroundings make it a excellent place to reflect on all that you have seen and done in Thailand.
Phra Sumen fort it's self was built during the reign of King Rama I. Although I never went inside I am informed that there is a museum inside which displays items found during the recent modernisation.
It's a short walk for the world famous Ko San Road (if you go the right way, unlike me!) and a good place to meet some locals. While I was there I met a young student from a local university who interviewed me for here project on sustainable tourism in Thailand. For people intersent in photography it is also a good place to get some pictures of the relaxed side of Bangkok and the river.

I have been to the park many times because it is a nice place with some shady trees and a slight breeze from the river. It is a well kept park with large signs prohibiting alcahol and littering. The fort is a small whitewashed tower of octagonal design with several old cannons poking out. Two hundred years ago it guarded the river. It is not open to visitors but you can take pictures of the outside. Local people sometines use the park for aerobics or to stroll around and take photos. There is a small canal on one side of the fort and a bridge over it to a small beergarden in front of Flapping Duck Guesthouse. This is a friendly place to visit for a drink and chat to the backpackers staying there. On the other side of the park there is a walkway leading to Phra Arthit Pier where you can get on one of the Orange Flag Express Boats which stop at all the interesting places alobg the river. You buy the ticket from a lady on the boat and it only costs 15 baht. I went all the way upriver ( heading to the right side) to Nonthaburi which is the last stop to the north of Bangkok. It takes about 45 minutes to get there and there is an interesting market about half a kilometer directly inland when you get off the boat. Going in the opposite direction you xan go to the Grand Palace or even further if you want to visit Asiatique.

The Phra Sumen Fort is interesting for its own sake as an historic military post, but the real reasons to visit today are three: a picnic with your lover, the dozens of spots that simply scream out "Take your lover's formal portrait here!" on its immaculate grounds (including lovely Thai brides with their retinues on weekends), and the myriad entertainments provided by solo performers of the juggling, musical and acrobatic type who seem to populate the place, particularly on weekends. Romantic views of the Chao Phraya, the Rama 8 central suspension bridge and lovely grounds are the backdrop for a pleasant morning or late-afternoon visit here.

I am unable to leave a good or bad review about this building as it was closed when I arrived.
However, the outside of the fort looked very impressive. It’s a gleaming white building surrounded by some nice grounds.
If only I could have gotten inside!

We were here during one of the most picturesque festivals in Bangkok, which is the evening of Loy Krathong, when people gather around lakes, rivers and canals to pay respects to the goddess of water by releasing beautiful lotus shaped rafts, decorated with candles, incense and flowers onto the water.
We had the opportunity to see the final night's festivities, and the dignitaries who came to the park. The park was packed, there was a magnificent parade, with amazing costumes, pageantry, and they launched thousands of homemade "boats" of various materials, shapes and forms on the river as a tribute to the Water Goddess.
The park is a very beautiful, serene, place to visit. I imagine during the day it would be a lovely place to walk, stroll along the river, visit the vendors and enjoy the majestic sights of the fort and the scenic

This fort is interesting to look at from the outside, but you cannot go in. Nice to look at on an evening walk by the river. Situated in a very nice park.

It has recently been repainted brilliant white and it looks very impressive. This is done every few years because iit doesn't take long before it's not white any more and I believe that it's because they don't give it anti-fungal treatment before they paint It so it goes black again quite quickly. It overlooks the river and the very pretty little Santichai Prakarn Park. It isn't possible to go inside but you can see it very well from all around. You can get there by road or by the river. Get off the river bus at the Phra Arthit pier.

Fort was well maintained and complete with canon. Only trouble was that you couldn't clamber over it. Lovely gardens to one side overlooking the river.

It looks cool but it's small and you could enjoy it by just driving past. Cannot access the structure at all. A good 5 minute trip.

This fort is situated along the Chao Phraya River (close to the Phra Athit Pier) and is a nice place to go on a hot day as it breezy & shady as it has huge tress surrounding the area.
Good place for taking photos in the evenings.
Other Tips for Bangkok
- Sunscreen is essential on a hot as you will almost certainly get burned without it
- Bring your camera as you will take plenty of pictures; especially in the evening.
- Please take note that :- smoking and consuming alcohol is prohibited in this area.
