A fabulous experience - ten different samplings, each at a different vendor. Different cuisines, different styles, different preparations. Vendors from restaurants to street food carts. Jan is an excellent guide - I highly recommend trying to reserve her services. She is organized, knowledgeable, adaptable to changes in circumstances and very professional. She led us through Chinatown streets, back alleys, even kitchens. She organized having us watch the chef’s preparation of a papaya salad and assist in tasting it to ensure the right flavor. She knew all the vendors and was able to get us in and seated even if the establishment was packed. She added a couple temple visits along the way, including teaching us how to make a lotus flower offering. The food we tried was surprising and delicious: satays, dumplings, traditional dishes like pigs knuckles (very delicious) or noodle soup, sweets like Chinese donuts, and even a popular local beer called Leo. With ten samplings, you need to pace yourself on how much you eat, but it’s difficult when the food is so good. There is a lot of walking involved in getting from place to place, but it is all flat. With all this, the whole tour can take three hours or more, depending on how long you wish to linger at each stop. There is a lot of ducking through back alleys, and Jan led us confidently throughout. She even helped negotiate our taxi ride back to the hotel at the end. It’s a great way to experience a living, bustling city at street level without any worry about food issues. Jan had vetted every vendor and venue, so in addition to the overall deliciousness, none of our party of six had any food issues at all. An amazing experience!
