The area
Address
Neighborhood: Sukhumvit
With a mix of shopping malls, hip bars and food stalls lining both sides of Thailand’s longest road, you’ll rarely encounter a dull moment along Sukhumvit. While the main road itself doesn't offer a lot in terms of entertainment, it's the adjoining 'sois' (alleys) where the magic happens. Popular spots are soi 11 for a lively night out, soi 4 for naughty nightlife and soi 21 for world-class shopping at Terminal 21. It's hard to cover everything this area has to offer in on day, so be sure to take your time. Sukhumvit is heavily congested with traffic during day and night, so getting from A to B is most convenient using the BTS Skytrain right above it.

I came all the way from Brazil to train at Yokkao and was amazed not only with the training, but also with Neri from the staff who went well above and beyond the call of duty to help me find my way back to my hotel and to teach me how to use the Bangkok subway system since it was my first time in Bangkok. Nat was also a major player in this winning team and helped book the private training before I left Brazil. And, off course, @petchmankong for the perfect training session. Yokkao was customer service at its very best level. I was not disappointed after flying more than 16.000 km for a training session. Thank you, Yokkao team. Thanks for the rescue, Neri !

I booked my apartment and training through Yokkao and there was no problems. All the staff, trainers, fighters and Muay Thai tourists are friendly and helpful.
The trainers are very technical and great fun to work with, if your a fighter coming to train here you will be put under pressure to learn and work hard with the fighters.
If your here to experience Muay Thai then you will have a great time and will not be intimidated by others as we all help each other. I had 1-2-1 sessions with Petchdam, very smooth combos and technical training, there was nothing that I could not do without a little bit of coaching. The classes are great. Get there for 2:45pm so you can run with the fighters at Benjakiti park, if you don't fancy the run come at 3:30pm, shadow boxing, bag work, pad work, bag work, clinch, sparring and then fitness. Full session will last 4 hours. There is a great family feel around camp.

Highlight of the camp was I have a signed t-shirt from all fighters and FREE ENTRANCE to Thai Fight to watch Saenchai fight I only had to pay for mini bus 400baht. Very cool experience because Farangs normally have to pay extra.

Apartment was clean and tidy. Everything worked, No insects or bugs. 5 minute walk from gym. The Chang surf bar is fun for body boarding and food. Great local street food in the Soi.

Will be returning in the future

Staying in Sukhumvit, Yokkao offered a great location (10 minutes casual walk from Asoke station) I was in Bangkok for 8-9 days and trained at Yokkao most mornings but no afternoon sessions.

The morning sessions are run a bit differently to most gyms - training starts at 8.30am but it's best to arrive earlier (around 8.00am) because when you arrive & pay you are allocated a number. When the padholders start (after 8.30am) you are called up to do your pad work in that order, so if it's a busy morning you might be stuck on the heavy bag for a while before being called up for pad work.

Probably worth noting that Saenchai did not attend any morning training sessions while I was there. No problem for me as I'm happy with any decent pad holder but if you want to catch a glimpse of him perhaps attend the afternoon sessions.

Overall, I found the pad holders very friendly and helpful. The morning sessions are 3 x 4 minute rounds of pads and then mostly do your own thing on the bag although they sometimes did some extra drills on the pads. Coaching was good, gym is clean, well set up. Overall it was a good experience and I would train here again.

If you've found my review helpful, please indicate below thanks!

Having trained muay thai years ago in London, but now training as a Western boxer I popped along for a session to see what the fuss was about. The gym is buzzing - the Thai trainers are lively, proffesional and are enjoying what they are doing. However the class lacked the structure I was used to - skipping, shadow and a few rounds of pads with a trainer and then just left to our own devices. I hit the bag for a while but then felt unmotivated and a little dissapointed expecting some clearer instructions from someone. It's great to see the pros in action - but there are far better muay thai gyms to train at in bangkok.

Earlier on this year, in August i emailed and booked a personal with saenchai. I booked our flights and accomodation around this. We were not asked to pay deposit or anything so about 2 weeks later I adnt heard anything so i emailed to confirm. I was told 'No Saenchai is not available that day' what!! We had not paid deposit or anything so we were dissapointed but I guess that can happen. So I re booked for the end of our trip, deciding we would pay for another flight; fly to bangkok from chaing mai, stay the night then have a personal with Saenchai and fly home from there. We booked and paid for a personal, flew from Chiang Mai to bangkok, stayed the night and arrived at the gym to see him only to be told he won't be coming, once we were at the gym waiting!! We had trained at Yokkao earlier in the trip (the day we were supposed to have first personal) and really enjoyed the sessions, but this was devastating. We had arranged our whole trip around this, and spent lots of money on extra flights, accomodation, taxi transfers etc. We were told sorry saenchai had a televison interview that day. It was booked, PAID FOR, and confirmed. I had even emailed AGAIN to double confirm as I was worried from previous booking. We were planning on returning and spending 8-10 weeks training but we won't be doing that now. So dissapointed. We know it's not Saenchai's fault, but who ever is his manager need to get it sorted. The person 'Nat' who handles all email conversation is awful. She has been the one I have communicated with both times and does not give 'two hoots'. She was even the person who confirmed the booking!!! I love Saenchai and so many of the Yokkao fighters but be cautious when booking as even after payment is complete, booking is confirmed TWICE, they do what they want.

The gym has top level fighters/ trainers but as a paying customer I wasn’t impressed by the training/ customer service at all! Not very friendly to start off either I can understand it’s there gym and all that ego stuff when your going there to spar or something but when your paying them good money and your a customer you should feel very comfortable and feel welcome as soon as you enter.. didn’t feel like this at all seems all they care about is insta famous celebs not people who genuinely want to learn something. On to the session you only get 3 rounds on the pads.. I think 5 rounds is more fair! Also no sparring, no clinching at all! Just seems if your not a top level fighter there or a celeb your just a tourist/holiday maker to them and they couldn’t care less about you apart from taking your money.. not going to lie I didn’t want to write this review as there’s Muay Thai legend here but in the end I only thought it was right to say what I really thought!

Hi branbox1, Thank you for taking time to leave a feedback about your recent experience at the gym. We regret that we did not live up to your expectations but do allow us to address some of the points you have made: 1) Every visitor is important to us. As we receive an increasing number of visitors, we have expanded our frontline team who have been briefed at length on maintaining the standards of the gym. 2) Many of our visitors get to clinch and spar at the gym by taking the initiative to ask our training staff. As we cater to different levels of visitors, sparring and clinching with our fighters or trainers are usually done upon requests. The fighters are often welcoming to requests for sparring and clinching except during periods when they are preparing for upcoming fights. 3) It takes time to assess the level of our visitors but anyone who is preparing for upcoming fights or hoping to experience the complete fighter experience can do so by informing our staff. We try our best to accommodate all requests from our visitors whether you are a professional fighter or complete beginner. We hope that this helps to clear things up. We appreciate your time in sharing your feedback and hopefully you will consider our gym again in the future.

I dropped in for the 3pm group class that had about 25 people. It was not very well organized. Mostly I was left to just figure it out on my own. The only valuable part was about 10 minutes doing pad work with a trainer. The rest I was just told to hit the bag on my own- no instruction, no corrections, etc. Many of the trainers were more interested in messing around playing with squirt guns than instructing the customers that had paid to be there. I have been to 5 other muay thai gyms around thailand and this is the first time I have had a bad experience. Might be ok for a private session, but the group class is a total waste of time and money.

Dear Ralph, Thank you for your feedback and we regret that we fail to meet up to your expectations. As it is a festive and joyous period for the Thai people (Songkran festival), our fun-loving staff have taken the liberty to indulge in some customary water play to celebrate the occasion. It is part of Thai culture to always have fun and keep things light-hearted. Our dedicated trainers take great pride in making sure that visitors get the most out of their training at the gym. We hope to have the pleasure of welcoming you back to the gym again in the future. Best regards, YOKKAO Team

I visited Thailand specifically to study Muay Thai and meditation. I chose Yokkao because it was where Saenchai trains. First, I have to tell you that I was considerably over weight. I ended up losing 20 lbs. There are two workouts daily at 8 am and 3 pm and they last about 2.5 hours. I had some difficulty getting through the entire workout after a few days simply because of how out of shape I was. The trainers were very encouraging telling me to slow it down and to breath and so forth. I was used to trainers in America being more hard on students and expecting them to ignore and work through pain or exhaustion, but the trainers here were very compassionate and helped me to go at a pace that was right for me. They gave me time to catch my breath and encouraged me quite a lot. Also, you get to interact with some of the legendary fighters like Lumpinee champion Singdam, Mannachai, Spencer Brown and Saenchai. They come around to you during shadow boxing and help you with your technique and spar with you. It is definitely not for the faint of heart. I got some private lessons from Wuttichai and he was a great instructor. He helped me learn the Muay Thai back leg round kick, 3 different kinds of sweeps, 3 different teap kicks, the Muay Thai lean back and some elbow and knee combinations with a great degree of skill and efficiency. Nearly all of the fighters there have had innumerable fights and the trainers who are trainers only have years of experience. It is outside so prepare for the weather. If you are already training for awhile, you will hone your technique and develop more mental toughness. If you are out of shape, spend a little time getting ready so you can make it through the whole work out, or opt for the hour long private sessions. It was an unforgettable experience. It is totally different from the kickboxing you learn the US. Good hearted, hard working people. By the end, I feel like I can work out anywhere now because I have made through the workouts with world champions and have learned from them too. If you go here, you will learn what it truly takes to become a champion whether in fighting or in life.

I've been trainingin muay thai for 2 years (6 years kickboxing prior to this) and I brought my wife who is a beginner.

We had private sessions and trainers were able to cater to our different levels. I hd a session with Kru Manop, trainer of the lehndary Saenchai (as well as other champions). One of the best pad men you can ever have and got so much refining of my technique in an hour.

My wife had a similiar experience and her trainer was ale to work around a past back injury.

This is a beginner and tourist friendly gym, but definately has a lot t offer experieced fighters and professionals. Some of th top fighters were training when we stopped by to take a look, including Saenchai and Singdam.

A very peaceful envirnment without ego at a very reasonabl price conidering the standard of training and the brand. A private session starts from £30 (a reasonable standard in London would cost around £45) and classes in the morni ng and afternoon are around £12 each (500 baht).

Despite common rumours about gyms, no foreigners are not made to use a different changing room and the thai fighters (and foreign pro fighters based at the camp) are too busy preparing for their next fight to stand around mocking beginners.

There might be cheaper gyms in Bagkok (it was still far cheaper than equivalents in Europe) but the high stadard and atmosphere did not disappoint. I especially liked the cats (there are gym cats which some of the fighters are very fond of cuddling).

Me and my sister trained for one week at the Yokkao training center in Bangkok. Each day we followed a private lesson and one group session in the afternoon. In one week we gained a lot of experience. The trainers are real professionals and adjust themselves to your own level. They train you with passion and the atmosphere is warm, friendly and you feel welcome from the moment you walk in. Definitely the best option if you want to learn Muay Thai in Bangkok from the best!
