Maeklong Railway Line
Oct 2018
Did a DIY day tour to the Maeklong Railway Line from here. The station is small, but charming. And with everything in Thailand, bustling with life, action and smells.

Lovely Train Trip
Feb 2018 • Couples
Wongwian Yai, a unique train station serving local trains along the short distance connects Bangkok Wong Wian Yai Station with Mahachai at Samut Sakhon District. The station hidden inside of the surrounding buildings, shops, market, houses, and a small road that runs parallel to the single railway track, passengers exit or board the trains either from the platform or from the road.
Location is not too far from the big roundabout with King Taksin Statue standing proudly in the middle of it. Moreover, this station also at a walking distance from BTS Train Station with the same name, through special elevated pedestrian corridor before joining main busy road.
The link to Mahachai can be travelled by approx. 1 hour train trip and the number of trains is up to 17 return trips per day. Mahachai is a small fishing village with abundance of fresh fish, prawn, squids, crab, and all related product of these stuffs.
Anyway not only locals use this train, a lot of tourists use this train as well as a part of their trips to visit the famous umbrella market at Mae Klong.
It is a slow diesel train but unique and relax trip, with a very cheap ticket for 10 Baht only.

Interesting train ride to the coast
Feb 2017 • Couples
Easy half day trip from Bangkok to the sea/fishing village at Mahachai.

Roughly hourly trains from Wong Wian Yai station (take BTS train to Wong Wian Yai then short walk to the rail station). If you want to sit in an air con carriage, check the times (available on state railway website) carefully as only one train out of 3 have air con. For that reason, I took the 10.40am train. I saw locals get free tickets from the ticket window, we brought 10 baht ordinary tickets then once on board, paid the 15 baht air con surcharge to the ticket collector. Journey takes just under an hour.

It's an old slow train but its fine with air con and cushioned seat in AC carriage. The train runs through the middle of several villages and small towns before reaching the food market terminal at Mahachai (just as we read, we saw market stallholders quickly whipping away umbrellas from the track just as the train pulled out of the station then just as quickly setting it back after it passed!). If you want to continue the journey, walk out to the pier to cross the river and pick up the next part of the train route from there. However be warned that there are only 3 trains a day from there so plan your timings carefully otherwise you might need to find a minibus back to Bangkok!

In Mahachai itself we walked to the pier and one of the Wats then wandered around the fresh food and seafood markets buying some cheap fruits eg. longan. I heard it's a great place for cheap seafood but we didn't try it. We returned on the 1.15pm AC train back to Wong Wian Yai.

An interesting short trip if you fancy getting out of busy Bangkok for a taste of local life.

A top day out
Dec 2016 • Couples
As western tourists we get very used to a level of service. This trip brings you back to earth. A rail friend recommended it.The train is noisy, it rattles and shakes its open to the elements, and it finishes its first leg in the middle of a fish market, who could ask for more. But wait the fare cost 10 baht holidays or 20 baht normal. To get to its final destination you have to get off at the fish Market (Mahachai)catch a ferry across the river and continue on the next leg to the next market where they dismantle the stalls to let the train through. (see YouTube). All in all a great day out seeing the real Thailand.

day out to fishing village

Take the train fromWongwian yai. there is only one track and the train journey is a window on proper Bangkok. sit by an open window and enjoy the views. The train arrives in the middle of a busy market and the sights and smells of fresh fish/seafood stalls is a joy to the senses. You can either stay in the market area, walk to the nearby park or take an onward journey by ferry and train. What ever you do it is a very pleasant day out and different from the usual tourist jaunts.
