I love this little square with its stupa and monastery. Not so many tourists seem to find it, so it is more a place where locals hang out. There are quite a lot of pigeons, which can be a bit of a nuisance if children are running about (I got a lot of feathers in my paint).

I found this stupa just by luck. The stupa is typical nepal style, just like Bodnath only much smaller. But the whole complex is really a worth visit. Also it has a lot lesser people. Around the area you can also find more temples, some souvenir shops and a coffee shop.

We are impressed with interesting attractions that still do not charge admission to tourists in Kathmandu. Those who are walking from Durbar Square to Thamel Marg should not miss the Kathesimbu Stupa compound. At the time we saw it, there were few visitors, so we could soak in the environment without distractions. The stupa is a smaller and less crowded version of the Swayambunath Stupa with flags and eyes of the Buddha painted on all four sides above the stupa. Even while we were there, one chaitya, or small stupa was being painted as a part of the everlasting campaign to clean up after the pigeons. Maintenance is basic at best. We were especially impressed with the well-maintained Drubgon Jangchup Choeling Monastery and ornate door that appeared to have been lifted directly out of Tibet. We appreciated that the shops in and around the stupa have T-shirts with mandalas that were not sold elsewhere in Thamel, and the prices are lower because Kathesimbhu Stupa is a bit south of the mainstream Thamel area. We felt that the unusual and intimate character of this compound, together with free admission made this attraction well worth our time.

I came across this whilst wandering along the narrow lanes. I did not know exactly what it was, but I asked.

Visited 2 times when walk toward Durbar square. It was not planned to look for it, but you will instantly spot it when pass by, because of the blue sky, spiritual stupa, chill wind to away from the busy road.

Do sit down and have local sweet milk tea at the alley, very spiritual place and blessed.

Of course, do visit the monk school and the prayer wheel.

I truly recommend this place for two reason, the pagoda is really nice but if you get inside the budispt temple you will enjoy it.

Secondly is a free temple and in katmandu almost all of them you need to pay entrance.
Is another quite place from the city but is not one of the most cleanest temples.

About the budispt temple, you can get inside without shoes and you can take pictures if the monks are not praying, I recommend to get inside is a relly nice place

The stupa is the centerpiece of a popular square just off Thamel Marg in the heart of the Thamel area of Kathmandu. There is at least one Buddhist temple on the periphery of the square and a number of Nepali arts schools and cafes. I rarely find tourists there but locals hang out and eat or chat or play - there's a lot of variety there.

I missed it first time, but asked a local who pointed it out. It is up a small lane then you enter a large square and the stupa is there!! The stupa is central Kthmandu's largest and is a small scale copy of the bigger stupas at Swayambhu and Bouda! Also in the square is a monestary that is quite impressive - it has a fabulous door! it was really peaceful so I spent some time here!
