A palace of the Rana's which has been restored and its beautiful and also expensive.Small shops line the alleyway to the inner courtyard having a restaurant.I believe there is around 4 Restaurants in this place and we opted for chez caroline, which was welcome break in terms of the food.
A beautiful place to sit back and just soak in the ambiance.

The calm away from the bustle

Well worth the short cab ride from the centre. (Dont pay more than 300/400). Pleasant upmarket shops but what drew us back was the excellent cafe serving delicious light lunches.
Also the Sidarth Art gallery within the complex is worth a visit

An oasis of peace and quiet in the center of Kathmandu
Feb 2016 • Solo
The historic complex has been tastefully renovated and hosts a number of high-end restaurants and shops. I love to just have a coffee and enjoy the beautiful setting but it is also a pleasure to stroll around the handicraft and antiques shops or the art gallery behind 'Chez Caroline'. On top of that restaurant you also find a somewhat cheaper little 'Shop with a Story' selling the products of local entrepreneurs. The place is not that easy to find but worth it. At the big Maitighar roundabout you have three big roads (one towards Thamel, one towards Patan and another one towards the Airport). Take the fourth (small) one between the one towards Airport and Thamel and get off the taxi about 100 meters from the roundabout. You will have the Singha Durbar wall on your left and a little parking on your right

Have exact change before getting into taxi!
Feb 2016 • Couples
Complex houses some wonderful restaurants and excellent shopping. Such a welcome respite when shopkeepers don't harass you. From Thamel, we paid 250 rupees each way for a taxi. No idea if that is standard but beware because drivers will start at 500. After agreeing on 250, the driver tried to shortchange us saying it was 350. I refused to get out of his car and the Baber Mahal guards came over to see what the fuss was. They could have intervened but chose not to; a little disappointing given what one would expect from such an establishment.

In the end the taxi driver conceded and gave us the correct change. Always have exact change so as not to give them a chance to pull this trick on you!

Best Steak in Nepal
Sep 2015 • Couples
I was very impressed with the pepper steak dinner I had at Chez Caroline Restaurant at Baber Mahal Revisited in Kathmandu. The steak was done perfectly and the peppercorn cream sauce was most delicious. It was the finest steak I have had in a long time, and that includes many expensive restaurants in US. The creme broulee for desert made for a great ending. Well worth visiting.

Subtle combination of high quality Nepalese Arts & Crafts and Good Food
Mar 2015 • Couples
Baber Mahal Revisited was originally the accommodation for the Royal Guards of Kathmandu. It evidently fell into disrepair and has been reborn as a centre for the arts. Even though it is a premier lunch or evening venue in Kathmandu, for some reason it is not strongly promoted as a tourism destination. Which is sad because it is a wonderful place to spend a couple of hours browsing the best that the Kathmandu Arts & Crafts scene has to offer followed by some excellent French (or is it Belgium) food and drink. It is also a very peaceful place mainly because it comprises 2-3 courtyards which protect the visitor from the noise, dust and traffic of Kathmandu.

Make sure to check out the stone carvers, the wood carvers and the brass and bronze shops. There is some quality products to be had at very reasonable prices. Please buy something; these talented guys need you support. There is something for all tastes; traditional as well as contemporary. And don't forget to stop by the watchmakers, but unless you have a spare $2000-$3000 on you, you will not be taking home one of these truly beautiful timepieces.

After the shopping head for Chez Caroline, a French restaurant with a Belgium drinks list located on the way to the centre's Art Gallery. Some very fine food to be had here, and given that many of the ingredients are imported, the prices are very reasonable. When we were there, there were a number of diplomats and high profile foreign visitors lunching there. So its a very cosmopolitan crowd. I suspect that the evenings will attract a slightly different clientèle.

Set at least 2 hours aside for your visit here.

outstanding experience
Jan 2015 • Family
We only found the location in our travel guide and our driver did not even find the location in the first place. But we were really impressed once we arrived. Its a superbly restored building complex and is a really sophisticated shopping location for tourist who want to escape the crowds of Thamel or Durbar Square. We really enjoyed the shops and found the different shops reasonably priced and bought some souvenirs in two different shops. We have as well enjoyed a nice tasty dinner. Will clearly go back once i am next time in Kathmandu.
