I am a museum freak. I´m not always so much entertained by the educationally correct, streamlined and sterile exhibitions of today. I have a strong drawing to the jumbled victorianish style of museums of before.
Especially in museums of natural history and archeology.
In the 70´s my wife and i visited the(I believe) National Museum in Katmandhu and aside from the very excelent religious art exhibited we also were much entertained by the stuffed tigers and such like which were often extremely moth eaten and paint chipped. Droll very droll.
The other bizarre highlight was the exhibition of awards & medals that had been presented to the Royal family which unabashedly included a fair amount of medals from the third Reich. Perhaps the nazis felt that Nepal was the mystic home of the Arayan race?
This is the first time I have returned to Kathmandu since 1979 and I stumbled over the Natural by accident rather than by design. Which is perhaps the best way to do it.
This collection has, perhaps, seen better days. For a modest entrance & camera fee (which probably finances the staffs tea continual tea party...) I was greatly entertained for a half hour or so. But I was & am slightly ashamed by my perverse enjoyment of what should be a much needed educational venue for the Nepalese and is instead a rather bizzare photo op. Be aware that the continual power cuts in Kathmandu increase the viewing difficulties of any real study of the decaying exhibits.
If you are passing this museum give it a look if you have a sense of humor.
This museum can also perhaps serve as a warning for what can happen to much of our public institutions as our legislative bodies strip funding and support to them for ideological and economic reasons.

Natural history museum of Nepal is situated on the lap of Swayambhu stupa, a world heritage site in the west hillock of Kathmandu valley. Swayambhu hillock is itself a famous place not only in the context of the culture, religion and history of Kathmandu valley, but also equally famous place for the early plant hunters in Nepal.

This museum you musnt approach with any expectations! It's certainly not london national history museum! But wow it is something. The entire museum can be done in 30-45mins and is full of fantastic and weird things. A few things (an 8 legged baby goat) reminded us of something from a horror film, but this is a museum in a league of it's own! Well worth 50NPR! Strongly recommend visiting!

This little museum( under the Tribhuan University) is ridiculed by Lonely Planets but the staff tries their best of documenting and preserving Nepals amazing variety of plants and animals with the small budget available.
I asked about different animals seen on my Everest trek and the enthusiastic mr. Devendra Maharjan helped find every one of them from my vague descriptions.
Entrance price of 50 npr should be affotdable fot all.
Go there next time you visit Svayambu.

Natural history museum of Nepal is situated on the lap of Swayambhunath, on the road to the tourist bus park, the Natural History Museum offers a faded but quirky collection of exhibits, including varnished crocodiles, model dinosaurs and mounted animal heads that look suspiciously like hunting trophies. The museum provides a valuable service to local school children and it could use more support.

Small cheap museum which is full of taxidermy and displays of Nepalese flora and fauna. Some of the taxidermy is hilarious.

This is a very old museum and has obviously struggled with funding to maintain the exhibits but still worth a visit as it is just in the street behind the monkey temple. You have to pay for entry & photos but it is a minimal cost. They have lots of very old exhibits and many of the animals are extinct / endangered. My 3 teenagers were fascinated. I'd recommend a visit here.

This place was really freaky. Lots of bad taxidermy in a room with poor lighting but worth the 50 rupees entry fee if you're not to squeamish - there are some strange specimens

A small venue that offers a overview of Nepal wildlife, don't expect a lot. Lighting is dark, labels difficult to read, and crowded displays are drawbacks.
