Six of us recently got back from the Nepal Motorbike Tour - 10 Day tour hosted by Third Rock Adventures. Do yourself a favor and try and add 1 -2 days before and after the actual trip. There is so much to do in Kathmandu and the couple extra days of relaxing on the back end were great. It's not for everyone but the Air Buddha Everest flight was really cool to add on. Not everyone can say that they have physically seen Mt. Everest. I'm not sure how, but Third Rock was able to get us tickets the night before a flight which was one of the highlights of the trip for me.
About the riding, make sure you are prepared for some intermediate to expert level off-road riding. I'd say about 50% of the roads are paved and the rest are dirt and rock. We only totaled 950km over 6 days of riding, but on some days you could only average around 35km/hr so each day was 5hr+ of riding. The roads can be narrow and a little unnerving as traffic just kind of goes whenever they can regardless of direction. Plan on getting up close and personal with others on the road including some buses. I don't think we quite understood that when booking, but I will admit it was a lot of fun once we got used to it after day 2.
This trip takes you to many of the most iconic cities in Nepal and you will see things you can't see anywhere else. We stayed the night in 5 different cities, but you stop through many others that will let you see some beautiful areas of the country. Coming from a very flat, not the same as Nepali Flat (little up, little down) that we joked about on the trip, area in the US I saw some of the most breathtaking views I will probably ever see in my life. Be sure to bring video equipment on this trip since while riding you might be prone to missing some of the sights. Now that I've watched most of my videos though I can say I will treasure this trip forever. All of the hotels we stayed in were fantastic and we were well taken care of after the long days of riding. I've not been spoiled at hotels like these before.
For the entire trip we had a full time 4 person support team. Everyone on the team was fun to spend 2 weeks with and supported anything we needed. We had a few maintenance things happen to the bikes, but the mechanic impressed me with his 10 minute fixes. Jaya was our guide and I can't say enough positive things about him. He was on top of the route, hotels, and sight seeing locations. He made sure that we were all comfortable with the itinerary and adjusted, even last minute, to make sure we were safe and happy the entire trip. I know Third Rock has a lot of different guides, but if you have a chance I highly recommend Jaya. After the trip Jaya and Naba, owner of Third Rock, joined us for a few dinners and I can truly say they made it feel like a family event. I've never been on a trip that felt quite like this one and I would highly recommend this for any bike riders who are looking for a challenge while seeing some of the most beautiful places our world has to offer.
