One of the best place to witness a game of traditional and modern archery. Which is a national sport of Bhutan. If you want to take some good picture of archery match then this is one of the best place to be.
Almost all the time there is a tournament being played.

The main place in Thimphu to hold national events. It has soccer field, tennis court, two archery grounds and a large parking space. With the lighting system in place, events can be held even during nights, especially soccer. National sport competitions are held at the stadium. Archery, which is the national sport of Bhutan is played using imported carbonated compound bows and arrows as well as traditional bow and arrows made out of bamboos.

If you don't know already, Archery is not only the most popular sport in Bhutan but it is also designated as the National Sport in Bhutan. So our small tour group itinerary would not be complete without visiting the Changlimithang Archery Grounds and watching an Archery competition.
As can be seen from the photos, the bows that are being used by the Archers here are not "toy" bows and arrows - they are using expensive, high-tech carbon fiber equipment for serious competition. The "target" that the Archers are shooting at is a small paper target that is so far down field that all I can see is a tiny white "spot" downfield - see photo of the target. It seems almost impossible for anyone to hit this target that is so small and far away - but we actually saw the target being hit by at least one Archer!
Very worthwhile and interesting visit to the Archery Grounds.

Changlimithang known to be own of the war field in the ancient times is now an arena for football and archery.
Changlimithang is divided into two parts, one for football and the other for archery-which is the national sport of Bhutan.
One can witness archery every day, it is amazing to see Bhutanese archers hit dozens on the target from a 145 meters range.
Enjoy the archery match if you are a tourist!

Saw an archery march here with locals dressed in their ghos, the people managed to shoot an arrow from 140m away and hit the circle, really impressive! They even have a cheering dance and song which adds to the atmosphere. Definitely worth seeing.

I recently visited Bhutan and traveled with Dechen Cultural Tours and Trekking, all arranged through Asia Transpacific Tours, as part of a ten week tour of Europe and Asia. Our guide, an avid archer himself, Sonam, took us to Changlimithang Stadium & Archery Ground, to watch several teams shoot arrows back and forth. The teams are separated by 476 feet (approx.). Each team takes turns by shooting arrows at the opposing teams target which is only about 3 feet tall! The game moved slow for me but the Bhutanese watching the session were quite enthusiastic about each shot across the field.

Archery is now the national sports in Bhutan and has been since 1971 when it was accepted as a member of the United Nations.

Worth a short stop if visiting Thimphu. Archery is the national sport taken very seriously. As other visitors have commented the targets are amazingly over 100 metres away from the shooting stand..which they hit regularly..difficult to even see the target let along hit the target circles. You are free to watch locals practice and compete.

I was fortunate to see an archery competition using traditional wooden bows and arrows. Catch one if you can as it’s a great spectacle, especially if someone hits the target, which is some distance away, because the opposition performs a special song and dance.

I reckon these guys would plit a pea at 100 metres!
The markmanship is outstanding!
The target is dinner plate size at 150 metres... and not only do they hit it, but get bulls eyes too!!!
When a bulls eye is hit, the archers carry out a song and dance around the target.
NOT to be missed!
