The Jungshi Paper Factory takes the ancient process of hand-made paper from wood bark into present day commercial products. This factory makes books, greeting cards, custom paper bags and lamp shades - all from the hand-made paper produced from this facility. These finished items are sold not only in their factory gift shop but they are also exported to the U.S., Europe, Japan, India and Nepal. It is interesting to watch the step-by-step process starting from the wood bark, converting it to wood pulp, screening the pulp into "wet" paper, hang the "wet" paper onto drying walls and then cut and color the paper into the finished product. Quite a long and interesting process.

To see the whole process of paper being made from the pulp to the finished paper was amazing. And what a beautiful finished product. It would have been very easy to spend a great deal of money on the handmade paper.

This was fascinating. This small factory produces traditional paper hand made from the bark of Daphne Bush. The process involves stripping the bark, soaking and boiling it, then crushing, pulping, layering, pressing and drying. We watched steps of the process in a tiny dirty shed but the paper is lovely.

The Jungshi Paper Factory is a small industry where papers are made traditionally from the bark of a tree named Daphne. You can have a close look at each step of how the bark is processed, washed, sorted, ground to a pulp and how a thin layer of paper is screened from the pulp. About 1500 sheets of paper are made each day at the paper factory. You can enter the factory premises and move around while the workers are working on paper-making. A shop beside the factory sells the handmade paper, cards, calendars, envelopes and paper bags. Know more about Jungshi paper factory, the paper-making process and other places to visit in Thimphu in our blog 'Places to visit in Thimphu' at Fairytale Studios (Link to blog in our profile)

The factory gives an overview of how paper is made. A good place for children to visit and understand the whole process, there is also a nice souvenir shop to buy products manufactured at the factory.
