About
Great Buddha Dordenma is a gigantic Shakyamuni Buddha statue in the mountains of Bhutan celebrating the 60th anniversary of fourth king Jigme Singye Wangchuck. The statue houses over one hundred thousand smaller Buddha statues, each of which, like the Great Buddha Dordenma itself, are made of bronze and gilded in gold. The Great Buddha Dordenma is sited amidst the ruins of Kuensel Phodrang, the palace of Sherab Wangchuck, the thirteenth Desi Druk, overlooking the southern approach to Thimphu, the capital of Bhutan. Construction began in 2006 and was planned to finish in October 2010, however construction did not conclude until 25 September 2015. The completed work is one of the largest Buddha rupas in the world, at 169 feet (52 m) and contains 100,000 8-inch-tall and 25,000 12-inch-tall gilded bronze Buddhas.

OUTSTANDING STATUE IN SIZE AND GRANDEUR
 The largest sitting Buddha, gilded in gold overlooking the Thimphu valley.  Amazing when lit at night, surrounded by clean, crisp air only possible in Bhutan.  Under the statue is a huge meditation hall.  Best time to visit is early morning or evening as footwear is not allowed, and the floor gets hot in the sun.  Statue was made overseas, and sea shipped in small pieces, which were then transported via Phuentsholing to Thimphu around 17 years ago.  Stand at the top and gaze at the valley for a panoramic and breath taking view of Thimphu city.

    Huge but peaceful
On a hillside over looking Thimpu is the 54 metre high Buddha which celebrates the 60th anniversary of the fourth king of Bhutan. In front of the buddha is a huge open area where a 1000’s of monks can worship together. Having taken your shoes and hat off (as with all Monastery’s) you may enter the monastery beneath the Buddha, inside shelves are lines with small bronze buddha’s gilded in gold, apparently there are more than 100,000 of them. We left by walking down the steps in front of the Buddha of which there must be 100 at least.

Must visit stop on your Thimphu sightseeing
Made of bronze and gilded in gold (which symbolizes indestructibility), the Buddha Dordenma statue is located atop a hill in Kuenselphodrang Nature Park, which overlooks Thimphu Valley, and can be seen from far off places while driving through the city. The first glimpse of the near 200ft tall statue - one of the largest Buddha rupas in the world - takes your breath away! There are also many smaller statues of Bodhisattvas on the site.

    Very impressive site.
This Buddha is visible from all round the valley. It sits near the top of a hill and is itself huge. You can go inside and view thousands of small replica Buddhas inside. In the plaza around the Buddha are various statues and plaques. It's a site well worth visiting. There's still some finishing touches to the steps up to it, etc but it is very impressive on its plinth and in its surroundings.

Must visit for view, beauty, and experience
Must visit place in Thimpu. It's free entry (May 2023) and the statue has a large picturesque and calming presence. The view from the top is good too. But real beauty is inside the temple. Walls are ornate with beautiful pictures from life and stories of Buddha and saints, main statues are mesmerizing and it is overall a very well lit and beautiful place to sit in. Unlike other Buddhist temples, inside is built and lit in little modern style and this makes the experience unique even if you are not Buddhist. Can spend 2 hrs easily.

    A good visit
Was taken here as part of a group tour. The guide who was with us gave us a lot of info about the place which was quite good. The inside of the statue has about 1000 smaller statues of Buddha along with paintings that tell the journey of Buddha. The time to visit would be in the day (preferably the first half) Also not that you cant click any pictures inside.

    A peaceful morning
I visited Buddha Point on Day 2 of my Bhutan trip. It's best to go in the morning as it can get very windy by the afternoon. At 2,500m above sea level, the air can be pretty thin, but the view more than makes up for it. A staggering 162 feet golden seating Buddha against the backdrop of a deep blue sky is a very mesmerising view. We can enter the main sanctum as well. Photography and video are strictly forbidden inside. The inner sanctum has a high vaulted ceiling with beautiful Mandala paintings. The walls depict the growth of Bhutan and its religious communities. Make sure to get great pictures of Thimpu City as well from the view point.

    We were speechless...
Beautiful place! Do not miss this place when sightseeing in Thimphu. Shakyamuni Buddha statue looks really impressive. Under the statue there is a beautiful temple, and it is a new temple where you can donate money and buy a small Buddha statue in your name, which will be added to the temple collection. This is perfect if you want to do something memorable and virtuous. A beautiful hiking trail leads from this temple through nature, and the trail is located on the slopes above the Thimphu Valley. At all places from the trail, there is a beautiful view of the city, mountains and temples on distant parts of the mountain.

    Majestic Buddha and mesmerising location
This is a lovely location atop a mountain in Thimphu. The sitting Buddha can be seen from a great distance. The complex houses lovely statues and you can see snow covered himalayan mountain peaks at a distance. Great opportunity for photo ops.

Since you are probably spending $300+ per day just to be in Bhutan, I would pass this modern monument up if your time is limited and spend the time on the ancient sites like Trongsa or Bumtang. If your time is unlimited, the huge Buddha and all the baby Buddhas are impressive. A lot and I mean a lot of gold. The site is on a mountainside with good access by car and a climb of a few steps. They do not allow photography inside. This site is kind of the antithesis of what you will see in the rest of the country. The wealth required to build this was imported by Buddhism. Not the humble, quaint "gross nation happiness" vibe you will experience in the rest of Bhutan.

My Bhutan Swallowtail guide, Tshering Pema, and our driver, Namgay, got me to the temple early, when light for photography was just right and there were few visitors, perfect for introspection, prayer and photos. The peace and wisdom emanating from the great golden face literally brought me to my knees. I remain humbled by the experience.

We visited Budha Point as it is locally called on 01 Dec 2022.
The Budha Statue is indeed grand with 10s of Golden Tara Mata statues in various postures and expressions.
The area is very windy so suggest visitors be suitable attired to cater to the chill.
Had a slightly unpleasant surprise qith a Rs 1000 ticket per person. The hall below the Grand Budha Statue closed by 1645h and we couldn't see inside. Even with it, we felt the entrance ticket was over priced. Wish there were some literature or audio guides to explain the architecture and the concepts.

Love the area on the hill, beautiful Budha but sacred inside so we can not take pictures there. Thankfuly we still enjoying the huge statue of Budha outside and uphill view scenery, lovely.
Public transport unsure, most of the people I saw are using group transportation or car rental.

What a serene place! The energy is pulsating here and I felt like I received the blessings of the masters. The Buddha statue is stunning and seems to loom large over the entire Thimphu city. Thousands of monks were chanting in unison here as there was some religious ceremony going on when I visited here. The daikinis or Goddess statues also add to the aura of this pristine place

This is a must visit place in Thimphu. Impressive Buddha statue with a temple at the base housing 100,000 Buddha statues. The view of Thimphu and the surrounding mountains from this point is beautiful. Take time to soak in the surroundings and visit the temple. Early mornings are less crowded and you will have the place for yourself.
