We stayed overnight at the Budongo Forest Eco lodge and had a great time visiting the forest. Our Chimp treck was cut slightly short as a storm brought large hail stones which were painful despite being in the forest. Unfortunately the chimps were wiser than us and decided to seek shelter, so we didn't manage to see any. Was a good 5-mile walk, searching for them and despite not finding the chimps, it was a most enjoyable walk. Woulkd definitely recommend a visit to the forest.

Budongo Forest is a forestered area of the greater Murchison Falls National Park.
It lies in Western Uganda and is a home to a stable community of chimpanzees both for research and tourism.
In addition to chimpanzees , the park is home to the rare tree Hyrax and endemic bird species Nahans francolin
. Most of the Lodges to Budongo and Murchison Falls are inside and At a budget level, and because of this tourists resort to having an overnight in Masindi town to meet low costs.
A new Hotel and camp has berm put up to solve this."NEWMAN'S CAMP"

The lodge is located at

We had a great experience at Budongo forest because we had shoots near the wild life animals that made our day in the pearl of Africa.

While Kibale is usually considered the best place for chimp tracking in Uganda, we had a far superior experience in Budongo. We were the only ones booked that day and while the tracking involved getting off the manmade trail, it was not terribly demanding. The chimp family was very active, but high up in the trees, so binoculars and telephoto lenses were required. We had a wonderful time, especially compared to the crowded and noisy scrum at Kibale!

Implemented in 2008, this long-term collaboration between Roman Wittig, Catherine Crockford and Klaus Zuberbühler, investigates the evolution of sociality and social cognition in wild chimpanzees of the Sonso community using observations, field experiments and non-invasive hormonal measures.

The chimpanzees (P. t. schweinfurthii) of the Sonso community have been observed continuously since 1990, when Vernon Reynolds founded the Budongo Forest Project (BFP) to study and protect a population of about 800 chimpanzees in the Budongo Forest Reserve innorth-western Uganda. In 2005 BFP was transformed into an Ugandan NGO: Budongo Conservation Field Station (BCFS). Since then the chimpanzee research is headed by Klaus Zuberbühler from the Universities of St Andrews (UK) and Neuchatel (CH).

The probability to spot Chimpanzees is relatively high. Our guide was very good in detecting animals and could tell a lot about them and the plants in the forest.
