The Bahai dome is located on Kikaya hill north of the city of Kampala. Opened in 1962 at the time of Uganda's independence, the temple is surrounded by a beautiful garden. The whole site exudes peace and devotion.
The Bahai faith originates in 19th century Iran where the followers faced repression and eventually spread out all over the globe. The Bahai believe all religions are to be seen as manifestations of one God. United the arrival of the last 10th prophet is to be awaited. The dome has 9 doors (gates) symbolizing 9 messengers (Buddha, Abraham, Jezus, Mohamed, Khrisna to name just a few).
Free entry, but bring a passport for registration at the gate.

I went three Sundays for public service. Nice gardens and the only place in Kampala i saw butterflies (after one month's stay). Many families and almost 100% local people. All nine doors wide open and high on hill distanced from roads so it is quiet. Lovely choir, written program in English so you can understand the prayers. No sermon, no collection and no pressure. There is a discussion on the lawns afterwards if you wish to learn more.

It was under construction when we visited, so we were not able to have the full experience. The guide was able to give us a brief overview of the faith. It was very informative.
The view of the city from up on the hill is wonderful.
Also the surrounding greenery is very relaxing and peaceful. We enjoyed our visit.
They provided leg coverings if you do not come prepared.

It is free to visit. My friend and me had a really good guide, who explained all about the temple in detail. If you have nothing to do and you want to have a relaxed day, just to lay down on the meadow or read the book - then go there earlier and find your spot on the meadow in front. You can stay until 5pm. Very peaceful and clean place.
P.S. This was my 3rd Bahai temple. :)

its one of its kind in Africa with a unique religion that accepts every religion within the universe.
the quietness of the building is amazing and the preaching of the religion is warm.

Unfortunately when we visited grass was being cut by many mowers and strimmers ,however would imagine without them would be a peaceful oasis in a very busy crowded city . You need to be able to walk a bit up the hill but it’s gentle and part of the experience .

My first introduction into the Bahai Faith was in Kampala, Uganda and if you are wondering what the Bahai faith is all about, a easy to read booklet printed in English is available free of charge.
Suitable attire is encouraged in any place of worship and this 'Peace Palace' would encourage you to be suitably dressed.
It's open daily from 9am - 5pm with Sunday Service at 10.30am.
Cars are to remain at the foot hill and visitors will have to walk the rest of the way.
You will enjoy the serenity of the lush green manicured gardens on your gentle stroll uphill towards the temple and birds will be happily chirping your welcome.
While photography is not permitted inside, the grounds offer lovely views of the surrounding areas.
I would have loved to spend a little more time admiring the gardens but we had a flight to catch later that day.
Picture a very serene and calm oasis perched on a hill amongst busy Kampala.
Someone will be waiting just before the entrance of the temple to give you a brief introduction of the Bahai faith and your free booklet. No cost is involved.
The temple is hexagonal and airy with a pale green dome shaped roof.
The interiors are rows of wooden benches perfect for some down time contemplation and meditation.
Visitors would typically spend an average of 30mins or more here.

How do I get there? Is there any public transport available or need to get a taxi?
Thank you!
Written August 19, 2015
Boda-boda (motorbike taxi) is the quickest way to go. Many of the drivers, though, may not know where it is. Just wait and find one who does. Or you can speak with locals and find out which Matatu (taxi) goes in that direction. I suggest the boda.
