Though larger and more diverse collections are housed elsewhere, the hands-on traditional drums and other musical instruments are the highlight of this modest collection.

On a saterdaymorning with a few hours to kill I went to visit the Uganda museum in Kampala. This unfortunately turned out to be an outdated en undermaintenanced musuem that could have been very nice. The displays have not been cleaned for a very long time and in many cases the signs are missing parts of the text. Also it misses proper lighting so it sometimes is hard to see what actually is on display

There are many interesting exhibits in this museum relating to the culture and tribes that describe Uganda. Our guide was great and very knowledgeable, and I learned a lot.
In my opinion, some of the exhibits are too accessible (cars, drums) and should be better protected from a curious public.
I would like to spend more time for more in-depth learning. Overall a satisfying experience.

Sad in almost every way. The nation has great cultures and so much history. This museum is a disgrace. Poorly laid out and hard to see. Dim lighting made worse by burnt out bulbs in several cabinets. Poorly done exhibits many of which seem to predate independence many decades back without any effort to use modern museum display design, lighting and signage. I saw several other good museums and display in Uganda. There are talented designers and graphics teams in Uganda just none used here.

If you've been to one national museum in Africa you been to most. This one has a few more exhibits. But it's the usual: precolonial times, various tribal artifacts (spears, pots, masks), colonizers, independence, and the general lack of progress since then.

Museum
needs updating asap. Displays need lights, updated information about our heritage and better signage. The place looks a little dated and needs renovation. The stuff displayed is okay bit could be better.

With my international student card, I got in for 10000 shillings.

Displays are quite lacking. There's also lack of information on modern Uganda history. There's loads of wordy information that felt like they were just lifted from Wikipedia and printed on really uninspiring white paper and arial font.

Don't miss the model of traditional houses at the back of the museum.

Unfortunately, a rather sad experience. The museum is clearly not a priority. Most of the exhibits are placed in wooden window cases, lacking any explanations or any sense of order. Many of the cases are not even lit or they're broken, not to talk about how sad the dioramas with stiffen animals are. The entrance fee is ugx 20,000 but they don't even give you a receipt for it. No surprise for the state of the museum. I hope on the future they will invest in it to show the rich history of Uganda in a more decent way.

Yes, this museum is not what Western people might be used to from national museums, but I personally had the feeling that exactly this point made it so interesting!
It seemed as if you'd walk into the museum as it has been since the colonial era-
displays like the (badly) stuffed animals are surely not a highlight, but walking through the museum was a time-travel-like experience - so it is a great place to go to, especially when looking at it from a "history of museums"-point of view.
