This decrepit pier was built by the French during the colonial era. It is just beside the nearly fully destroyed, older German version. No need to go out of your way to see it, but most likely you would drive by this structure.

The bridge was built in the German colonial Era. There was even a wooden bridge that was initially built in 1900. Later on Germans decided to build a metal one, because a lot of people became food for fish, while being transported by rowing boats from the big ships during strong tides. The metal bridge was finished in 1904 and had a length of 300 meter! 7 years later it was destroyed by a storm but French colonists renovated it in 1928. The bridge was in use up to 60-ies. Right now it is occupied by homeless people and it is not safe to walk on top of it.

I did not realise that the French and German's had tried to build a bridge to the Benin. It is now home to some homeless people. The beach did not look very clean. Makes a wonderful photograph at sunset.

This is really a ruin. You will inevitably see it while crossing Lomé. Not worth a special visit, except if you are fanatic of late 19th century industrial ruins.

It is clear to see from the remains that this was once a very stylish pier stretching well out into the sea. It must have been a good site. This is best viewed from a distance as the pier and the golden sand and palm trees provide a lovely context for the pier.
