- Luv2TravelFarNWideAtenas, Costa Rica1,385 contributionsNOT handicap accessibleThe road up to this sanctuary is a nightmare, but they're working on making it better. And you can't drive all the way. You must park and walk the last hill. The guided tour is interesting, and the work they do here to rehabilitate chimpanzees (and prepare for release) is admirable. Our favorite part was when our guide provided us with both a visual and his imitation of a chimpanzee's vocalizations while explaining what each of them meant. Very interesting that they've learned so much about the chimps' communications. Walking around the sanctuary requires traversing uneven and rocky ground, as well as lots of steps. Definitely not handicap accessible.Visited November 2023Traveled with friendsWritten December 8, 2023
- patthegreatCharleston, South Carolina2 contributionsWonderful stay - birdwatching tour was the bestWe had a great time staying two nights at Tacugama in the Bruno lodge. The staff were wonderful and friendly and the food we were served was delicious and plentiful. We took the birdwatching tour with Alfred which was great - it was wonderful to tour the reservoir and forest early in the morning and see the colorful birds of Sierra Leone. Alfred's energy was infectious!Visited December 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten December 17, 2023
- Suzanne G1 contributionA must visit in Sierra LeoneA real must visit if you find yourself in the Freetown area and you love nature. The most warm welcome from the accomodating team, stunning ecolodges and amazing work they do for the chimps. This really is a sanctuary, not a zoo. Hopefully soon the research team will accomplish their goal of finding a safe space in the country to set the chimps free again.Visited January 2024Traveled with familyWritten January 21, 2024

Money well spent, as they are doing nice job saving those creatures.Visited March 2024Traveled with friendsWritten March 14, 2024
- SFTM15 contributionsA real gem! What a gem. We had a fantastic couple of hours, and were fortunate enough to get some time with the founder Bala too. Its a well run sanctuary for the 100+ Chimpanzees there. If you visit then its great to know that you are also helping fund an extensive research programme and their education work in Sierra Leone schools on environmental protection. Tacugama are active in work to protect the National Parks too (we visited Outamba Kilimi) where we saw the impact of their work first hand.Visited March 2024Traveled with friendsWritten March 19, 2024
- Rowina L11 contributionsGood experience, can recommend to goIt was an interesting tour at the chimpanzees sanctuary. Even if I had seen many of these in other countries every time I learn something new. The guide was amazing and you can see he really loves his work and the chimpanzees. I can recommend the tour at the sanctuary with one of the hikes so you can learn more about the surrounding and see the nature.Visited April 2024Traveled with friendsWritten April 12, 2024
- Kirstie C10 contributionsA chance to experience chimpanzees in their natural habitatWe had a lift to the sanctuary as it's about 45 minutes from Freetown. Luckily it was a 4 wheel drive as once you get up into the hills it's pretty steep! It looked like a car park was being built a bit lower down, so in future people could park and walk up more easily. We had a guided tour from the staff, and saw how the chimpanzees worked their way up to be independent and ready to release into the wild. For obvious reasons we don't interact with the chimps, but watching them come and get their lunch, and the babies at play was really special. The centre is doing important work, and a visit to support it is extremely worthwhile. Deforestation is a big problem, not only for loss of habitat but in causing devastating and dangerous mudslides. This was our first experience of the rainforest, and the whole place was so interesting. We would totally recommend a visit and tour from the knowledgeable guides.Visited May 2024Traveled with friendsWritten May 27, 2024
- Qui FUnited Kingdom3 contributionsTacugama Chimpanzee Sanctuary: A 'Must See' when visiting Sierra Leone. My niece & cousins & I had a memorable visit to Tacugama last Sunday. A nature reserve & a sanctuary for rescued (abused, traumatised) chimps to be rehabilitated & re-wilded if possible in future. We were led by the very knowledgeable & excellent tour guide named Suleiman. There was so much to learn about these amazing primates. Fascinatingly we were told the great primatologist Dame Jane Goodall had visited & deciphered some of the chimp "language". However seeing the chimpanzees was the main & best reason for the visit. They are just fascinating. Beware of the teenage chimps - they, like teenagers the world over, can get quite stroppy & temperamental. Definitely Tacugama Chimpanzee Sanctuary is A 'Must Visit' when in Freetown Sierra Leone. I came away deciding to sponsor one of the chimpanzees for a year as places like these are always in need funding.Visited June 2024Traveled with familyWritten June 4, 2024

You must phone in advance of visiting the sanctuary and the tours are scheduled to coincide with the Chimpanzee’s morning and afternoon feeding times.  The entrance to the sanctuary is very steep. Unless you have a robust four wheel drive vehicle, it is recommended to leave your car at the bottom of the hill. After the turn off from the main road you should walk up the path that climbs alongside the makeshift road. The walk is uphill and a little slippy and takes around seven to ten minutes to ascend. It must be said if anyone in your family has mobility issues, you must think twice about doing this tour. There is a lot of walking, climbing stairs and standing on uneven terrain, so consider these issues if you have very young or older members of your party.  The tour guide is exceptionally knowledgeable. There will be trivia about Chimpanzees that will keep you interested throughout the 60/90minute tour.  There is a nursery playground observation area where you can view the chimpanzees being fed. Their antics will amuse the younger group members especially during feeding time. The chimpanzees are segregated from visitors. All the chimpanzees are rescued with the aim of being rehabilitated into the wild. So there is no interaction between the public and the chimpanzees, and it is discouraged as these chimpanzees have not always had positive interactions with humans and it’s the sanctuary’s responsibility to manage the welfare of these animals.  For the more mature chimpanzees there is another viewing area which is more wild and natural but it makes spotting chimpanzees harder. At the end of the tour you are invited to visit the shop, which has a few t shirts and hand fans – though the hand fans can be bought in Freetown cheaper. There is a spiral staircase that climbs 30 metres up to a lookout point. Here you can see the rainforest canopy but not much else.  In conclusion the sanctuary is another facet to an interesting experience in Freetown.Visited June 2024Traveled with familyWritten June 25, 2024

They also organize various hikes and other activities to do within the national park which are absolutely worth checking out. Thank you to our guide emmanuel, who was able to answer every question and articulate the importance of the work thats being done there. If you visit the Western area of Sierra Leone the Chimpanzee Sanctuary is a must.
Not only will you be helping the wonderful work done here but an insight and being educated is included in the price which is approx ÂŁ11.
There are 5 stages of rehabilitation leading to a group of chimps being reintroduced to the wild.
The tours visit each stage which are explained in detail.
It's a privilege to see these great apes being given a chance to go back into the wild.
It's a must see and should be on your list when visiting Sierra Leone.
I do think they are missing a trick in the souvenir and drink and snack market.

Located in a wonderful piece of jungle, close to Freetown but away from its hustle and bustle.
Tacugama is a Chimpanzee sanctuary with a wide variation of conservation initiatives together with local communities.
I stayed in one of their wonderful ecolodges, was toured around the sanctuary and could admire the chimps living their life and minding their own business.
The vegetarian food they serve is outstanding, a good reason to come back!
Great respect for the founders & staff for taking excellent care of the Chimpanzees and me as well!

Huge positivity dedication and devotion to the welfare of the Chimpanzee at Tacugama and their carers. Most of all education about the habitat of the Chimpanzees and how at risk their forests are due to deforestation. So much more than a sanctuary. Meeting the Chimps and being introduced to their characters and how the Sanctuary integrates newly rescued Chimps was inspirational. Our guides were excellent and passionate and so informative.

What a lovely experience. Beautiful space of land. Chimps look very cared for, which made the trip exceptionally pleasant, even though sad due to a lot of their traumatic pasts. My family and I went at lunch time, meaning we were just in time for feeding - which was also lovely!
The tour itself was wonderful. Very passionate and informative tour guide Noah, explained to us that this was a Sanctuary and NOT a zoo, an element that I really found important. We were taken by Noah and Emmanuel around the Sanctuary, into the rainforest very carefully and safely, and this my family appreciated too.
It is honestly an amazing place, and I would have loved to stay at the yoga retreat etc. for a couple of days, but sadly our trip in Sierria Leone is coming to an end.
I would recommend Tacugama’s chimp sanctuary to anyone and everyone, and would love to return when I am here again.

We had a wonderful stay in one of the eco lodges. It is remarkable how peaceful and quiet this place is considering its close proximity to Freetown (20-30min drive). You really feel like spending the night in the middle of the jungle. Walking up to the sounds of birds and excited chimps (guess they also like breakfast). The food was good and the staff even nicer. We would highly recommend taking one of the hiking trips with a ranger. Walking to one of the peaks we could clearly see the impact of deforestation on the top, and the importance of conservation as you can see the protected area of tacugama versus the non protected area.
If you are a nature lover and want to spend some peaceful and quiet time while supporting a good cause, you can simply not skip tacugama!

The road up to this sanctuary is a nightmare, but they're working on making it better.
Definitely not handicap accessible.

The whole family of 9 enjoyed seeing the creatures live especially my children from England. It was an awesome experience. There are few things you must be weary of, firstly the road is very bad and dangerous only jeeps would be able to go through.
Secondly, You would be ask to pay more if you are not a Sierra Leonean which I think is not fair and discriminatory. The people running that facility should maintain the road leading to the Sanctuary to avoid accidents and make it accessible.

This was my second trip to Tacugama, the first with my family, and it was another fantastic visit. Their team is doing incredible work despite some serious challenges, the latest of course being covid. They've recently reopened to the public and have taken safety measures very seriously so we felt safe and comfortable. They have a lot of new baby rescued chimps which means they need support more than ever...and what a pleasure it is to support them, between meeting their dedicated team and the wonderful chimpanzees in their care, the delicious food, the beautiful nature hikes and the lovely eco-lodge set in the middle of the rainforest, every bit of the trip was fun, educational and relaxing. Our girls loved hiking through the forest, meeting the chimps and listening to all the animal sounds from our balcony, and the staff were so warm and welcoming to them. If you're visiting Sierra Leone, this sanctuary will definitely be one of the highlights.
