Saturday 27th May we were on a Tour around the City of Dakar and it's cultural sights. While driving along Rue de la République in the City we spotted this impressive large Cathedral.

Sadly a stop here was not included in our tour itinery, so it was a slow drive by photo opportunity.

The main entrance is rather grand with three doors, they are flanked by four wall mounted statues of the Virgin Mary. Above the statues is an inscription which translates, "To the Virgin Mary, Mother of Jesus the Saviour." The entrance is situated between the Cathedral's two massive towers.

The roof contains a number of Byzantine domes, the large central dome with twenty, Greek style windows around it.

The Cathedral was built with Sudanese sand stone and English granite, construction began in 1924 and was completed twelve years later. It was consecrated on 2nd February 1936, by Cardinal Jean Verdier, archbishop of Paris.

It is the largest religious space in Dakar which was built on the site of an ancient cemetery.

Would have like to go inside to have a look.

The Our Lady of Victories Cathedral also called Cathedral of African Remembrance was inaugurated in 1929. Today, the memory of Father Brottier is still preserved in the cathedral of Dakar which carries a new dedication: "To the Virgin Mary Mother of Jesus the Savior". Lady of Victories Cathedral celebrated its 80th anniversary in 2016. To see: the Sudanese-style towers, cupolas and Byzantine terraces, caryatides ..African materials (pink sandstone from Sudan, Tunisian marbles, massive Gabon woods, Ouagadougou) are associated with the granite slabs of Brittany or the bronze ornaments made in Auteuil -France by the orphans of Father Brottier.
A large dome illuminated by twenty windows occupies the center of a construction in the form of a Greek cross.
On the large portico of entrance, flanked by two towers displayed in capital letters the following inscription: "To his dead Africa grateful France". The original text was replaced by a new one " À la Vierge Marie Mère de Jésus le Sauveur ( to the Virgin Mary Mother of Jesus the Savior) ...Nice cathedral

A nice, quiet and simple place designed for praying. Have a white good looking from outside. Located in the middle of Dakar, and nearby lot of nice restaurants and cafes and there's a Lebanese one on the corner.

I was so excited to visit this church. I stopped here on my trip to pray and reflect. The doors were wide open and I love that, a church should try to always have the doors open and be welcoming. And I felt very welcomed. I wish I could've attended mass here but I definitely will on my next visit to Dakar. The angels on the front of the church in the images of Black people give a nice touch. That is something you don't see in the States and it made me feel very good.

a landmark for the Catholic population, with a large mixed chorus, Senegalese instruments, and a large European organ.

What attracted me to this Cathedral is the art work on its facade. It is gorgeous, simple, and the angels are African. What do I mean by that: the statues have their hair braided African style, the angels have African features, which is uncommon for a church built in 1936. The Sudanese-style towers of the building reinforce its feel as a mixture of cultures: a Catholic church in a mostly muslim country, and European with African touch. The art work is truly different from any, and make the Lady of Victories stand out.

Saw a VIP wedding in progress from outside. It is larger than it looks. Worth a visit for sure when in town.

This Catholic Church is quite understated. A beautiful almost Art Deco exterior and a quiet simple interior. Worth a quick visit

No service was going on during my visit. It is a big beautiful cathedral right in the CBD of Dakar. The cathedral is old but well maintained
