- Luv2TravelFarNWideAtenas, Costa Rica1,384 contributionsCritical piece of Senegal's historyIt's so sad to think of the inhuman things people did to others, and a visit to this island makes it so real. You'll need a passport to get ferry tickets, and the ferries are packed before they ever depart. Definitely worthwhile to do a pre-arranged tour to help you navigate the ferry and to truly understand the history of the island. Plenty of tourist shops and small cafes/restaurants. You can do this tour in as little or much time as you like. The ferries return frequently.Visited October 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten November 27, 2023
- Musicians Mum1,313 contributionsVery interesting historical locationVisited (and stayed one night) as part of a tour. Short ferry ride (always fun on a ferry eh?) from Dakar port. Small population reliant on tourism (mainly day trips) and fishing. One can see many reminders that this was one of the major embarkation points for the slave trade run by numerous European countries . The day we went (Monday) the museum was closed . The are some interesting memorials. As well as the history of slavery, one can see ,on the hilltop ,the gun emplacement that was the rangefinder for the Dakar batteries in WW2, when the Vichy administration were in charge and the Allies and the Free French attacked to try and take control of the port (but lost the battle and ships)Visited February 2024Traveled with friendsWritten February 29, 2024
- Anthony SBrisbane, Australia1,863 contributionsSensational visitThis is must be one of the most stunning places to visit in Africa. A 20 ferry ride from Dakar and you are in another world, transported to the Mediterranean. Beautiful buildings with stunning narrow passageways and such an interesting history. The real history may not be the the official history but the sentiment is still correct. Easy to spend most of the day here but you should arrive early.Visited June 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten June 6, 2024

I enjoyed every step. The food was excellent and we were able to visit most of the main attractions. Especially Goree Island..I recommend Mika Guisse the tour guide manager of Trip Tour Senegal for anyone traveling for the first time to Senegal. He was very thorough ,patient, informed and we could understand him very well. Don't miss the Pink (Salt) Lake and Cheikh Diop University.

After an absence of nearly 40 years my wife and myself are paying our first return visit to Senegal and high on our must do list was the Isle de Goree where we were earlier today.
To access the Island, one needs to take a Ferry from Dakar Port and - perhaps being the weekend - both of our crossings were full and not helped by relatively rough seas.
On arrival, we were delighted to discover our favourite Restaurant Chez Tonton depuis 1949 was still going strong and was our venue for both lunch and afternoon tea (see subsequent Review).
The Island itself is full of history - much centring around the infamous slave trade (numbers vary but a figure of 20 million is commonly mentioned!) but there is also an impressive Second World War Gun Implacement at the far side of the Island.
All in all, Isle de Goree is a special place and somewhere all visitors to Dakar should spend some time to fully appreciate the prominent it played in the Slave Trade.

Very nice little island in Dakar bay. Many colourful houses and baobab trees. Up on the hill people have converted the old war bunkers into houses, which was interesting. The house of slaves is not that interesting to visit, but still of historical significance.
It feels like a world away yet Easily accessible from the Dakar port, although it can get busy queuing up for tickets as ferries are not that regular, so come 30 min in advance.
It’s very tourist with many sellers

A short ferry ride from Dakar to this beautiful island with a tragic past. Many guide services available in Dakar or free-lance guides at the dock. I traveled alone with a guide book nd had no issues getting around.
The island has been well-preserved and the major historical sites are easy to locate including La Maison des Esclaves.
There are quite a few local artists on the island including Djibril Sagna. Look for his unique gallery near the Fort. He's featured in many native art catalogues and museums worldwide.

The history of the Island although sad was intriguing. Our tour guide spoke pretty good English and knows the island very well which made our visit interesting. I particularly found the sand arts they make on the island fascinating and beautiful. Overall we had a very good time. Certainly one of the places I’d recommend you visit if you find yourself in Dakar

Great Colonial Architectural. took the family for day outing. we spent about 6 hours on the Island. the old buildings are really worth seeing. we took a guide from the island which for us was really worth it. he showed us everything.after finishing all the historical site, we settled down by the port to have lunch isn some local place. we all had the famous fish pies called Pastelle with the tomato hot sauce then had a good Cheb (Very Famous Senegalese Red Rice) with fish and lots of veggies.

It is advisable to get a guide to take you around and give you a commentary of the history of the island. The salve building is a very humbling and emotional experience but well worth the visit. The rest of the island is beautiful and nice to walk around. Extend you time so you can have lunch in one of the excellent restaurants near the ferry stop. The people there are also very friendly and helpful. A lovely experience.

Our 2 night trip to the island was extremely enjoyable. Rather than a day trip, you have time to really explore the island . The architecture is amazing . The evenings were pleasant after the day tourists left on the ferry. We had a peaceful stay at the quaint Chez Coubis.

This is a delightful location with what appears to be historic (European style) architecture, cobblestone streets, gorgeous bungalows and much more. I didn't see a single car, but I cannot verify that there were none. There are many varied things to see.
A word of caution: if you're not familiar with shopping in Dakar, Goree may take you by surprise. The vendors are very aggressive. They are not mean or dangerous by any stretch of the imagination; you just need to be prepared to say "No, mean "No" and stick to "No." Do not even enter a vendor's shop "just to look" unless you are prepared to refuse every thing shown to you. The vendors will not give up for a long time. And one vendor will lead you to another, and so on and so forth. There's plenty of wonderful things to buy. And you could easily find yourself buying them all . . .
Also these friendly vendors may seek to make your acquaintance on the ferry ride over. They are quite charming. Be careful. The biggest threat to your wallet is you. Just remember that.
Now, forget about shopping and go to Goree and see what there is to see. You won't be sorry.

I just returned from a day touring Dakar, including Goreia Island. While I found the island visit and a following city tour interesting, the primary purpose in this review is to introduce the capabilities of Mika Guisse, my guide during the Goreia Island visit. As a single traveler, one of the challenges in visiting Dakar and most cities in West Africa is identifying capable tour guides who can handle all details from airport transfers to hotels to sightseeing. For Dakar, Mika proved his capabilities. He has recently put together a pretty good website, Trip Tours Senegal, and is able to handle tours to Dakar and San Luis in Senegal, and the nearby cities of Banjul, Gambia and Nouakchott, Mauritania. Knowing where to find these capabilities is invaluable when planning to visit countries in West Africa.
