    Mesmerizing ...
This small yet beautiful island steeped in culture is a treat for the senses. I loved the ornate doors and the intricate mosaic work on the houses. This coupled with the narrow alleys lined with beautiful trees and flowers makes it a memorable experience.

    Easy trip and charming island
This is an easy trip. It's a great (small!) island you might be tempted to swim to. It's nice for a stroll and some lunch or a drink by the water. My advice: take the pirogue. Climb in with a bunch of people. It's way more fun than having a private-ish boat for a five-minute ride, and it's less expensive. Enjoy.

    Day Trip
took the family to Hotel D'Italy. we were in the water for hours before going on a tour of the Island. the people were so friendly and were willing to answer all our questions. we finally settled down at the same place for lunch. we all had the Yassa Poullet. its a grilled chichen with onion and Peppers sauce served on a plate of rice. very tatie.

    great view on the ocean
Not as great as Goree, still worth a visit. Relaxed atmosphere, nice walks, art galleries. The east side faces Ngor village and i'ts warmer, very nice bars with deckchairs, the western one faces the ocean from cliffs, both fascinating

    Watch out for scams!
We were expecting it to be a mini version of Goree, but it's in a lower league. It's small, covered with buildings with only a few places where you can get to the water. There are a few restaurants and small beaches, the beaches are clean. Besides that really not much to see. In order to get to the island you need to get a boat and this is were you need to be careful. Here is what happened to us. When we got to the island, we paid for the ride and then some guy on the island was constantly begging some money "for the community". When we returned from the island, one guy came to us and told us that the money we payed were fake. I went to the exchange place with him and confirmed the money were good. Then we got surrounded by a crowd of you young men and they were telling us we payed them by fake money. They were becoming more loud and aggressive and demanding us to give them more money. So to keep the story short, we were screaming out loud for policy and it soon arrived (looks like someone on the street called them). When we arrived to the police station, my wallet and phone were stolen, the young men all disappeared and instead some older man explained that because we payed by fake money, it's a crime and we may end up in jail until Monday (that was on Saturday). Then police took me to a bank, they verified that all money I had were good, so they said I'm free to go. But they refused to issue a police report about the stolen phone and wallet. Basically if I understood the idea of the scam correctly, by claiming that the money were fake, they find out where the traveller stores money and steal them. And if a tourists want to go to police, they scare them by saying that paying by fake money is a crime. The main recommendation is to pay for your safely and hire some trusted guide to travel with you. If that is not possible - try to carry as little valuables as possible. Finally, stay on the main streets in plain view and demand police. While police is not perfect, they are not interested in obvious crimes in public, so they'll provide physical protection and prevent things from getting out of hands.

    Public boat
We recommend taking public boat. We took private boat. Cost ok. But insular. On public boat, you can soak in the local sights and sounds.

    Ngor Island
I am travelling alone. I walked to Ngor beach (Plage de Ngor) and got to the Ngor Island pirogue area near Hotel La Madrage. A man asked me if I needed help and was kind enough to walk me to the boats. You pay 500 CFR and get given a life jacket. When they summon you, you have to clamber onto the pirogue which may mean getting knee-deep in the sea to get in at the lowest part of the boat. The boat trip to Ngor takes about 5 minutes. Upon arrival, you are sometimes approached by people trying to sell you bracelets etc. I've found that being polite ("non, merci") and shaking your head is usually enough to end the offer. There are local people who want to guide you around the island, but if you're like me and enjoy exploring alone, this was a little annoying and in the end, after one exclaimed that he really liked me and thought I was beautiful, I had to tell him to leave me alone so that I could explore myself and I walked off in the opposite direction. I wasn't about to let this ruin my time there, so I wandered off and found some places to sit and watch the sea and the birds- cormorants and a LOT of kites. There was a nice man called Marmaduke who ran a stall on the far side of the island and he has a friendly black cat. He asked questions about me and why I was in Dakar and didn't try and sell me anything, just wished me on my way. I appreciate this kind of thing a lot- if I want to buy something I will approach you!! The second beach is far quieter than the one you arrive on and it was easy to find. The island is very small so it's difficult to get lost. On the second beach, I discovered a place called Oasis with sun loungers and tables where I laid in the sun for a while and enjoyed a beer whilst reading my book. I wasn't hassled there at all and I enjoyed the respite from the busy city. At 6pm I took the (very busy!) pirogue back to the mainland and walked back to town. Ngor island is a nice place to visit - the locals will happily chat to you but if you'd like to be left alone it is possible to find some peace in some areas!

    Little pearl, better than Goree
The island is just a short pirogue trip away from the village the 'ngor, I paid the equivalent of a couple of euros to get there. The island is small and can be toured in about 40 minutes - when I went there were very few people around the island which made it even quainter. I had food at a local bar on a terrace with outstanding view over Dakar. At the back of the island (on the opposite side from where you'll arrive with the pirogue) there is a door that looks over the ocean which is called "the door of no return" to remember the slave trade starting from there. Compared to Goree Island, Ngor is much less touristic, and you are not assailed by tens of local vendors trying to get some money for their products. I really recommend Ngor Island.

    Ngor island
Nice, small island. You can go to the island from the Ngor beach. The beach seems chaotic, but locals are very friendly. 1000 francs for a return ticket with the "public transport" boat. Private boats for 15000, not needed. The trip takes 5 minutes only. Nice island with sandy beaches, good restaurants, good to spend a half day there.

Worth a short visit when in Dakar
This is well worth a visit for lunch and a quick walk around. It is approx a 5 minute boat ride from the mainland. The island itself is very small but also very relaxed. It is well worth walking around the full island - the furthest parts have a lovely view and you can see some very quirky artist homes. For food, there are quite a few options, all catering for different tastes and budgets. Either way, worth a visit for lunch/ dinner.

Ngor island is a haven of calm in hectic Dakar, and was my favorite stop anywhere in the city environs, including Goree Island. Peaceful, with the most pleasing architecture of any part of Dakar we saw. It helps if you are, as I am, a fan of the classic surf documentary "Endless Summer," which was made in the mid-60s and which started its around-the-world search for the best surfing spots at Ngor. I loved being able to see Ngor Right, which is where the surfing in the film took place. We had a nice talk with Jesper, the Danish owner of the Ngor Island Surf Camp, who gave us some interesting background on surfing in Ngor and who is also an expert on "Endless Summer." Nice views from Ngor back to the mainland, fun waterfront restaurants, some good craft shops and all in all a pleasant experience. And the short boat ride over is also fun and very inexpensive. We didn't see any of the hustling or persistent efforts to sell that some people have remarked on. Come and enjoy.

In contrast to the better known Goree Island, there really is no hassle here. Take a pirogue from the mainland (you will no doubt get your feet wet) and enjoy an hour or two on the island. WAlking around the island probably takes 20 mins but you might just like to stay longer and enjoy the peace.

Make sure to check the weather for wind before going. I went out on an extremely windy day and got completely soaked by the waves on the trip over to the island from head to foot. Aside from the two small beach areas there is little to see on this island. If you are looking for a peaceful day afternoon off maybe check somewhere else as there are a lot of people pushing to sell items in this area and beach bumpsters too.
