I could not be happier with how this trip went! We left from Dakar via the company Niokolo-Transport, an overnight bus. The Dakar-Tambacounda line runs more regularly than all the way to/from Kedougou. For only 6.000FCFA for the former and 11.000FCFA for the latter, it really is one of the best ways to go in order to maximize your time.... More

i first went to the niokolo in 1984, the wildlife was already not great but at least acceptable, the hotel was nice and employed more than 40 people...30 years later, the park is almost empty of animals, although birding is still quite interesting...the hotel is a pale shadow of itself, in fact it is terrible: electricity only a few hours... I have been in the tropical forests of Cameroon and the Ivory Coast while this was the subtropical forest can I say. Pure Africa!! We enjoyed a lot our day around the park, booked directly at the ecolodge where we stayed the night before and after (they offered us a delicious picnic meal for the day at the park) Ballacounda Ecovillage only 1km away from the park entrance (I highly recommend this ecofriendly b&b) Great wildlife atmosphere and not crowded by tourists... Feel free to contact me for additional information. PARK SURROUNDINGS AND ACCOMMODATION NK is 8-10 hour ride to the East from Dakar. The regional center is Tambacounda and is not much to see. But the villages along... More
