About
Founded in 2014 by two gentlemen with a love of fine whisky, stunning views and a strong sense of pride in working with local communities, 1000 Hills Distillery was born. But like most great ideas, originally they thought of starting a vineyard, but lucky for us, they thought better! To be honest, it's a challenge to find high-quality ingredients, but one of the reasons we chose Rwanda in addition to the amazing resilience of the country is that we could source materials locally, thus supporting micro and small businesses. Since our beginning we come to produce five unique Made in Rwanda, triple distilled liquors, such as a Coffee Liqueur, Vodka, Light Spiced Rum, London Dry Gin and Single Malt Whisky! Unlike most alcohol companies, social impact is at the heart of the company! To learn more, book a Distillery Tour! From all of us at 1000 Hills Distillery, please enjoy responsibly.

A small individual destillery with a restaurant, overviewing a beautiful view. We had a beaf steak cooked at the table on a very hot brick stone. Very cool and tasty. Never seen this before. To drink we had gin tonic. Unfortunatly it didn't tast gin nor tonic. The spirit have a strong taste of fusel. Other drinks served at lur table tasted the same. The 1000 hill destillery should spend more effort in the lab and improve the destillery process to remove all rests of fusel. The result stoped us from comming back.

Delicious restaurant and nice distillery tour. We enjoyed the brochettes and other delicacies. The view was superb and service was quick. We brought friends to visit a second time in our short stay in Kigali. We bought a bottle of whiskey for the wedding we attended - as all guests must bring a bottle to share.

The outdoor dining areas offer spectacular views in the day time and a rather romantic setting in the dark, however, the indoor ambiance is rather plain, simple and uninspiring.

The service is better than a lot of Kigali restaurants, as the servers seem to be well trained, however, it took more than 45 minutes for our orders to appear and they did not come out simultaneously.

The barracuda on a rock is a pleasant sizzling novelty, however, the novelty wore off once I tasted the fish. The fish was neither flavorful nor fresh.
On a subsequent visit, I tried the fish tacos instead. Their were adequately seasoned, but grossly over-cooked and just too chewy for tilapia.

For the money, stick to enjoying the views and perhaps a nice wine.

1000 Hills is always a delight! Although it's just off the road, this place feels like an oasis on the hills overlooking the gorgeous hills west of Kigali. It's just 15 minutes out of town, but is such a respite.

This past week Olivier was our server and he was great! We both had their burgers (not on the menu, but ask for them). They are yummy! The menu is limited, but what they offer is very good. Their hot stone meals are good - I think the beef and chicken are better than the fish for this preparation.

While you're there, check out Rupari Designs tucked just below the restaurant, but inside the compound. Beautiful things.

I thoroughly enjoyed my Distillery tour and tasting. Hussein was the perfect guide, who loves his job. Even though I was on my own, it was a fun and informative hour. The owners are passionate about their distilling, and I learnt a lot. At the end of the tour, Hussein checked that my taxi was there to return me to the hotel!
Next time I am in Kigali I will make sure that I stay for dinner! Great venue up in the hills.

A group of us went for lunch at the distillery restaurant. It was a wonderful experience and the view is fantastic, high up on one of the hills around Kigali.
The food and service was fantastic and the sizzling beef served on a hot rock was a great experience.

The Distillery is not easy to get to but we were eager to go based on reviews. The service was awful at every level and we did not enjoy our evening at all. We arrived to the restaurant to find the patrons included two groups of families and two other couples. The families had essentially taken over the outdoor seating while the indoor restaurant was empty. We stood at the desk as we arrived to check in for a reservation. After several minutes, we gave up and moved to the bar. It took the bar tender a full ten minutes to acknowledge us and when we ordered drinks, he told us he was out of ice. We said we did not mind skipping ice, and ten minutes later, our drinks were served. We asked three times for an order of chips and guacamole. Meantime, the families in the lawn area let their children run wild and when they crashed into us at the bar, we moved indoors where we ordered dinner. The family soon followed us inside, so we asked to be reseated again away from the noisy and misbehaving children. Our only option was a very small hightop table because the rest of the seating area had not been cleaned and remained littered with glasses, bottles, etc. A prime bar area with sofas was taken up by families who put their children to bed there. After being reseated, we waited a very long time for our meal and were actually about to leave when it finally came to the table. The steaks we ordered were fair, but not great and we were irritated that we were not going to have a peaceful evening enjoying cocktails and a view. Between the children running wild, the horrible service and the fact that the restaurant was running short of many key menu and bar ingredients - including ice! - this would never be a place I would recommend. Kigali has many other fantastic options.

I am very sorry to hear that you did not enjoy your visit. My apologies that our outdoor seating was fully occupied by other customers and families with children. It was very unfortunate that you visited us on an evening that we were very busy and one that we were having power issues hence the lack of items on the menu including Ice. I appreciate your negative review as it will give us items we can focus on to improve our service to other clients in this New Year.

Don’t arrive with high expectations.
We were met by a nice guy in his pyjamas. He told us that he’s part of the marketing team. He took us into the one room that is the distillery. Answered about 40% of our questions with about 60% certainty. He had us sniff some cinnamon and then we sat in an awkward circle, being given shots of the liquor being produced there. We talked briefly about what we liked and disliked. And then we were thanked for being there. I presume he wanted to get back to bed.
I guess it’s not terrible. But i wouldn’t recommend it....
And of course, 25 000 francs is a fair chunk of money to look at stainless steel vats and sniff cinnamon. 🤷🏾‍♂️

Hi Dom, Thanks for sharing your feedback. First off, you should have reasonably high expectations, it’s important for quality and experience to be of a good standard, it’s critical as Rwanda positions itself as a luxury destination and thus we apologize for not hitting that standard yesterday. Secondly, we shared the feedback with our head tour guide and our colleague this morning who did the Tour for you and we’re taking actionable steps. In regards to your experience, we’re a small craft batch distillery, hence the size of the distillery but we’re working hard every-day to grow and improve the quality of our tours, liquors and of course grow in size, that’s why we always ask for our customers’ feedback at the end of each tour. In terms of the price, it is price competitive compared to other distillery tours of similar size and nature globally and takes into account the craftsmanship of our Master Distiller, using quality local ingredients to make premium liquors to international standards among other elements. We read & respond to reviews across all platforms. If you have anything else to share, don’t hesitate to email us at info@1000hills.com. All feedback we receive helps us improve our Distillery Tour and restaurant experiences for our future customers.

So the last thing I expected I’d be doing is visiting a distillery in Rwanda. It’s in a beautiful location, with amazing food and and a lot of valuable learning to be done. The tacos and cocktails are worthy of the trip alone. It’s 20 minutes or about £15-20 by taxi from the Marriott with a hotel executive car. Well worth the visit, we really had an enjoyable experience and brought lots of Christmas tipple 🙈 the place is clean and well put together and the fact that it helps to support the local community through employment, animal feed from the waste and also the denaturalised alcohol for the health department to create insecticide is just an added bonus.

Firstly the location is incredible with sweeping views of Kigali. The tasting room and restaurant are comfortable and casually chic. The food is very good. The cocktail menu is extensive and the staff was very attentive, swapping out a cocktail that didn't quite meet our expectations.

This is a wonderful way to spend an afternoon or evening with friends.
