Definitely worth the short walk from the major Kigali downtown hotels. Exhibit is quite well done and the grounds are lovely. A fitting tribute to the men who lost their lives here. Careful of the gatekeeper as you exit the exhibit. He cornered us into giving a donation (to him, it appeared) after reminding us the memorial entrance itself was free.

The memorial is dedicated to 12 UN staff and 10 Belgian peacekeepers, who were entrusted with the security of the Rwandan prime minister in April 1994. They were ordered to hand in their weapons and promised safe passage to a UN compound by the Rwandan army. The prime minister and her husband were shot dead at point-blank range. Though the Belgians had given up (most of) their weapons, they were later killed as well during their passage. The site where the skirmish took place is now the memorial compound.

Much has been said and written about how this could have happened. Judgement of error by the UN department for peacekeeping operations in New York headed by Kofi Annan, who had ignored alarming cables about the situation on the ground. A UN senior officer who had ordered the Belgian commando's to give up their arms. The nationality of the soldiers may also have played a role as the Belgian government (unlike the French) at an earlier stage had distanced itself from the Hutu government.

Anyway, the last obstacles standing in the way of the genocide were eliminated. The flood gates were open. During the next 100 days hundreds of thousands of peace loving peole were massacred.

This covers the first few hours of the genocide and how things unfolded. I highly recommend visiting Camp Kigali since this is where the killing of the peacekeepers and Prime Minister happened. The bullet holes seen in the photo's are real.

There is a different, a more visceral, feel than the Genocide museum.

This is a small site so how much time you spend is up to you.

We were there for over an hour.

Run by corrupt officials - quite ironic and tainting an otherwise touching tribute. A man (Abdul - working at around 4pm on Sunday 27th august) followed me to point out the order of reading the posters with clear numbering. Anyone who can read them, will likely know how to count to 15. And at the end asked me to follow him to the room with the guest book away from others and asked for a tip. I said no and then he said a “donation” was compulsory. I said no and he got aggressive. I had to borrow money to pay him and then asked where the donation box was. He said I should just hand it to him. Doubt it made its way to a donation box.
The tribute itself was small and worth a look but it tarnishes their memory when people like this use it as a way to scam tourists and pocket money

Like most memorials in Kigali, the Camp Kigali Memorial was very informative of the genocide history in Rwanda. I highly recommend visiting because Camp Kigali Memorial gives you a wonderful picture of the city's devastation with bullet holes in the building.

Just one look at the bullet-ridden bungalow and the visitor does not need further stories about the horrors that took place in this place. Inside, there are posters highlighting details of what happened and how foreign peace keepers were trapped and killed. A grim warning to humanity about the horrors of war.

Nothing much to see there except for a bullet riddled wall and arches with names of the Belgian peacekeepers. If you are in the city however its fitting to go there an pay tribute to these brave men who laid their lives trying to protect humanity. It takes max 10 minutes to visit the memorial.

The Belgian Peacekeepers Memorial is small but intense, a tribute to 10 Belgian soldiers who were murdered on the first day of the genocide in April 1994. The site where the soldiers died has been preserved as it was found after their deaths, and it has been turned into a quick (but informative and encompassing) overview of the terrible events of 1994. A group of stone sculptures represents each solider, and reading about them - and how art was used to commemorate them - may bring tears to your eyes. The site is located near Kigali city center, and it is definitely worth a visit.

This is a bit of a hidden memorial telling us of the saddest part of Rwandan history. Here the death of 12 young Belgian soldiers is commemorated. They lost their lives after a 2 hour battle against troups on the day the genocide started. It is done in a dignified manner and the gentleman tending to the memorial is always at hand to explain more than the plaques tell us. If you speak French he is easier to understand. I have taken a few people there and find its almost private atmosphere appropriate in this context.

Camp Kigali , I have read about genocide of April 1994 in Rwanda.

From Hotel Rwanda to UN Peacekeeping Missions to stop the genocide, what triggered the genocide is what is important.

ten Belgian UN peacekeepers were murdered by the Hutu extremists in order to provoke a withdrawal of the UN forces, which then cleared the way for the full scale of the Rwandan genocide to unfold.
