The Lower Mosque is the oldest temple of Islamic worship erected in Maputo. The construction of the mosque, around 1889, took place from various contributions of the Muslim community of the city of Maputo, having been worked in Arabic style, with capricious laces with floral themes and geometric features. This mosque had the peculiarity of not being a copy of any other mosque in Africa and perhaps in the world. The entrance has a broken arched Arab gate. The arch with similar decorative motif was first used at the Ibu Tulum Mosque in Cairo in the year 870. The mosque has recently undergone rehabilitations and functional alterations that did not affect the essence of its original features and was enlarged To accommodate the growth of the user community.…

The Mesquita da Baixa is a beautiful immaculate building in the old part of town ("a baixa"). Built at the end of the 19th century, the mosque and its 6 minarets have been regularly maintained and restored. It belongs to the Pakistani Muslim Association. Still in operation, the Mosque can be seen from outside by the nonpracticing.…
