Completed in 1944 this cathedral is a good example of the modernist style that became quite popular in the 1920s and 30s in Europe. The Portugese architect, de Freitas was a civil engineer and clearly inspired by a churchbuilding in a similar style in Le Raincy near Paris. The use of reinforced concrete was a major innovation and moreover less expensive than the traditional masonry. The simplicity of the structure stands in sharp contrast to the Baroque and Neoclassicist buildings such as the nearby Railway station and the Mercado Municipal.

The interior as well is sober with little distracting ornamentation. One of the few paintings drew my attention as it focusses on the activities of white Catholic missionaries in an all black African environment. One is being assassinated by locals, while the others are depicted as pious souls bringing the gospel to the indigenous. Rather colonial themes.

This Catholic cathedral stands out for its simple, linear shapes and white color in an area where there are colonial buildings. The interior is also simple but pleasant and interesting to visit even if only for a few minutes for those who enter it as a tourist. I definitely think it should be included in the itinerary of the visit to the city.

The church is one of the main things is needed to see in Maputo, very close to the city hall. i think the interior of the church is nice but not charming but the real charm we saw there was a wedding. you can not imagine how much i was excited since i am very much interested in cultures and traditions. the dances, singing songs, young girls and every thing of that wedding were the things i never forget. hope you see a wedding when you are there.

Worth a quick visit inside; not much to see though...a few pics and items from Pope John Paul II's visit.

The cathedral was very nice, the exterior grounds and surrounding properties are in need of major renovation, very dirty, lots of garbage through out the city.

An attraction to see when visiting Maputo, Mozambique. Not all that, but unique. Just a walk away from the iron house, and the statue of the father of Mozambique.

Lovely Cathedral with a unique architectural design- both inside and outside. Definitely worth a visit. From there one can also visit Samora Machel's statue and the Maputo municipal building, which are just next to it.
