A house made of iron prefabricated in Belgium parachuted in the capital of a Portugese colony in the tropics! It was meant to serve as a residence of the Portugese governor, but ever since 1892 the year it was erected offices went in and out. It was just too hot inside.

Perhaps a good example of how ignorant the initial Portugese rulers were about local conditions. For me a surprise that Gustave Eiffel did the design. Was the man as backward as his clients or was he just not interested in far-away territories?

There was an interesting exhibition of paintings in the hot house.

Iron house located just outside main gate of the Botanical Gardens and just down from independence square. Same architect as the Eiffel Tower in Paris. It is all made of iron..walls, roof, floors!…disastrous construction material in a country with 50c summers, cool winters and lots of rain!. Worth a drive by and when visiting botanical gardens.

Worth a visit but don’t use the trip advisor location - its misleading!
Its right outside the entrance to the botanical gardens.
Entrance is MTC 100 for foreigners.
You get an interesting guided tour.
Ground floor has air-conditioning - but top floor gives you an idea why the Govener never lived in the house!

Close to the botanic gardens entrance, this house, designed by the Eiffel tower designer, Gustav Eiffel, and made entirely from iron, was constructed in Belgium and then shipped to Mozambique where it was assembled. Originally intended for the governor’s residence but never occupied, most probably for its building material highly unsuitable for a hot tropical climate. It is possible to visit the first and second floor, but we found the internal part of the Casa de Ferro not very interesting.

The Iron House (Casa de Ferro) was prefabricated in Belgium and built in Mozambique in 1892. It was designed by Gustave Eiffel, although the architect never set foot in the country (surely if he had set foot there he would not have built an iron house inside in summer they exceeded 44º). General admission is 50 metical (0.75 euros).
I found it curious and I think it is a must-see if you visit Maputo.
100% recommendable.

the House is not as charming as you would expect but when you listen to the story behind the house and learn who has designed it you might have another idea.
actually this is a design of Gustave Eiffel, so it is a kind of privilege for Maputo. the way how each Iron sheet is designed, cut, made and attached are amazing i believe but it was not a good idea to build such a house in the heat of Maputo.
any way the Iron House of Maputo is one of the must see

Strolling along downtown Maputo and its "Avenida Samora Machel", near "Praça da Independência", "Catedral de Nossa Senhora da Imaculada Concepção", "Centro Cultural Franco-Moçambicano" and "Jardim Botânico Tunduru", an unusual construction will certainly catch your attention. This is the famous "Casa de Ferro". It was designed by iconic French engineer Gustave Eiffel and was built in Belgium, in 1892. The structure, in cast iron and iron sheets, was shipped to Maputo and assembled with bolts on concrete foundations. Envisaged to be the residence of the former Portuguese Governor-General, it was never occupied as such, probably due to its highly unsuitable materials to hot tropical climates. It was restored in 2014 and now houses traditional local arts exhibits. A quick stop, a few photos and keep going. A lot still to see. Enjoy!

We arrived there as part of our own city walking tour. The house looks amazing from outside. When going inside you will c how this house can be all dismantled to pieces of steel again. I loved it specially that I was totally imagining something else. How recommend going there. Its a 15 min stop while walking the old city
