The Natural History Museum was founded in 1911 and contains an interesting sample of elephant fetuses in formalin from each of the 22 months of gestation. It has been installed since 1933 in a very beautiful Neo-Manueline style building. The staff was very friendly, we arrived 5 minutes late and even though they were closing, they let us in to see it, they explained it to us and showed us the first floor. It cost us 100 metical per person. To get there from the center you have to take a chapa (a kind of van bus), it's about 3 stops. In general we found it very interesting and essential if you visit Maputo.
100% recommendable.

Lovely old building in a beautiful location. An excellent varied collection of exhibits, the big beasts, insects, snakes, etc as well as a super collection of african cultural relics. Fascinating. Look beyond the dust, lack of money and not a lot of information in English and you will spend a couple of happy hours for a small price.

I know this place since my childhood. There's s unique collection of elephants preserved in featus stage. Highlight of the visit. I have visited this museum many times in the past. It reminds me of childhood. Wildlife is depicted in a way that's not to be found anywhere else in the world. All mounted up in the early 20th century. The entry fee is symbolic.

The museum, for the time and the mentality of the period, can be considered complete, not less than other of the same period in Europe.
There is a huge collection of stuffed animals.
The imagination of the embalmers has reproduced bloody scenes that, in their drama, today are a bit funny.
We had three very interesting days in Maputo, city that worth to visit. For getting anywhere I really recommend the driver of tuk tuk we had the occasion to know: Anronio (mobile +258 842119500). He really know and love his city. He is a good man, enough english speaking to communicate well (it is rare among the taxi/tuk tuk drivers of the city) correct, serious and fast in understanding the needs of its customers. We visited the most various places in the city, which are more and more than the spots indicated for example in the Lonely Planet.

Old-fashioned museum - very old-fashioned - in stunning colonial-era building. Sadly, the main exhibit, filling the ground floor, is stuffed animals. We were fresh from Kruger, and my senses revolted at being confronted with these dead examples. Left withourt seeing the rest of the museum.

We reached there while touring the city of Maputo. The entrance fees was 50 MZN and I would say its not expensive for such a place. It has many animals “not real” and I loved how its organized in a way that similar animals are together. If you are expecting to see real animals then its not the place to go to. This place has dummy animals which could be interesting for some people

The Museum of Natural History is a landmark in Maputo. The building and gardens are pretty and show some of the grandeur Maputo (Lourenço Marques) once had. The collection of stuffed animals dates back many decades and have ever since hardly been updated and cleaned.
The most famous part of the collection is the wall with Elephant phoetusses in different stages of development, which is a pretty impressive sight.
That said, it is great to see the excitement of the local visitors for the exhibit... and the pictures some of the teens take of eachother with the animals as a backdrop. For the 50 mzn admission it is a worthwhile visit with will take you approximately an hour.
In the garden you can find some paintings of the late Malangatana Ngwenya and if you are lucky you can find the famous Mozambican sculptress Reina Sadimba working on her master pieces.

There is no upkeep of this beautiful landmark. It is very dusty inside. It is also relatively cheap to see - about $4.

I just came back from a visit to this museum. I honestly think they could charge more than 50MT & restore/revamp the museum. Beautiful building from an architectural point of view, but it is so dated inside & not really well kept. So much more that could be done with the displays. I was disappointed... don't go with high expectations. The gardens are lovely though.
