- khursheed1Gaborone, Botswana133 contributionsGreat for a quick visitIf you happen to be in Port Louis and passing by, stop over. Note that for those shopping at the Caudan waterfront, you can walk there through a tunnel access. Best to drive there though due to the heat of being in town. Big plus: free entry. Another big plus: good aircon in the port louis heat. Interesting for a quick visit with kids, as you learn a lot about the sea creatures, dodos, butterflies of Mauritius. Unfortunately no wifi access at all, despite the numbers of visitors and tourists, which is a great pity. Nice little garden to relax in afterwards. Try your luck and park a few steps away on the road parallel to the museum, by the museum entrance (make sure you have a parking card purchased from any petrol station). There is a KFC across the road, but rather buy a "roti" from Aka roti and drinks, and then go to the little shaded park with benches opposite the museum and have that, for a more authentic Maurician experience.Visited January 2020Traveled with familyWritten February 1, 2020
- NauticalVoyagerDurbanville, South Africa1,470 contributionsYou cannot get better value than FREE.You can’t get better value than free. Small but excellent exhibits. 4 rooms : birds and small mammals / marine / insects and finally, dodo. My young son especially loved the marine exhibit which also includes two fish tanks. Information is concise and exhibits are in good condition. Parking in the area is a problem and there is no parking on site, so we parked at the waterfront and walked. I would suggest this attraction needs 30 mins to an hour to give it justice.Visited May 2022Traveled with familyWritten May 13, 2022
- EmJLondon, United Kingdom6 contributionsSmall traditional museum with a unique exhibitSmall but perfectly formed, taking half an hour to visit this museum is worth it for the only dodo skeleton in existence of a single individual - all others elsewhere are composites. Free entry. Easy walk from the waterfront where you can park the car.Visited November 2022Traveled as a coupleWritten November 9, 2022

Interesting museum with some very interesting facts about the Dodo and other now extinct creatures, local butterflies, plants, animals and fish. It is near a park with lots of flying fox fruit bats roosting. Close to the Waterfront complex.

Worth a quick visit and with only 4 rooms and a gift shop the size of a broom cupboard (closed for lunch when we went) it won't take you long. Stuffed birds and authentic marine animals models (thankfully not all to scale). Plus an entire room devoted to the Dodo and how humans had a key role in their extinction.

The museum has had a refurbishment since our last visit. There has been some interactive stuff installed. An upstairs part which examines Mauritius during the war.
There were familiar elements from previous visits here. I spent more time on the upstairs segment which was informative.

It was an interesting and enriching experience for all the kiddos but also for those visiting it.It has free entrance. No entry fees to be paid.inside there is a large varieties of exotic and endemic animals. The pupils were impressed once in the insectorium section. They could see different and beautiful insects.inside we could see the statues of aquatic animals ranging from tiny to very large animals.finally there was the history of the extinct birds of dodos and Red rails in Mauritius as well as the Solitaire in Rodrigues.A bisit which impacted positively in the mind of each and every one.👍

The Natural History Museum is based next to Company Gardens in Port Louis. Its the oldest museum in Mauritius.
Its a rather fusty museum whose most famous exhibit is is a reconstruction of a Dodo from the only complete skeleton in existence.
It also contains other collections of birds, reptiles and marine creatures. Some of the birds such as the Solitaire and the Red Rail are now both extinct. You will also find a collection of fauna.
The museum also houses a library of books and also has temporary exhibits. On an earlier visit it had an informative temporary exhibition on the slave trade.
Admission to the museum is free. Behind the scenes there is much academic research going on including some work done on Dodo bones by a time of Dutch and Mauritian scientists.
Its a shame that no photography is allowed at the museum. This allows the museum to sell postcards etc of the infamous dodo.
There is also an element of it being an old fashioned museum and it does need to be modernised. I am aware that some parts of the museum was being refurbished in February 2007 when I paid a visit.

Hi everyone, sadly the museum is closed.
Big sign on the front gate saying closed until next year, but no specific month or date saying when it will be open. The guard also just said "next year" to me.

Frustrated as didn’t read reviews on here beforehand and walked around Port Louis thinking we could go and walked for a while only to get there and it be closed for the foreseeable future. No indication on when it was going to re open again sign just stayed until future notice.

This is a small museum close to Government House and it's worth popping in to see the very interesting Dodo exhibition in the last room. It details the recent finds of Dodo bones giving an insight into more than was previously known about this bird, with a short video clip of David Attenborough talking about the finds. And it's free!

Information is a bit unclear since reviews are contradicting a bit. Is anybody able to confirm if the museum is reopened now (end of march 2019 e.g. march 21st) or is still under renovation?

I'd recommend visiting the Aapravasi Ghat Museum in Port Louis (and perhaps buying one of the books from there that give some background to Indian arrival in Mauritius) and then going on to the Mahatma Gandhi Institute in Moka, which holds the records (including photographs in many cases) of Indians who came to Mauritius as indentured labourers. Allow plenty of time!
