The market is composed of 3 floors - the first selling all sorts of fruits and vegetables at reasonable prices (you get a taste of the local culture and market vibes), the second selling the same touristy crafts and souvenirs you find any place else (like magnets, baskets, keychains that sort of stuff so it wasn't impressive), and the third... A must to visit... Bursting with colour and smells that will delight your senses. Remember to barter (as low as you can to commence - usually a third of what you are willing to pay) then go up from there. Enjoy

I wish I waited to buy all my souvenirs here (eg. key- chains,magnets)- much cheaper than some of the other places(eg.SuperU) I visited. I felt that the shops around the market had better prices than the stalls in the market itself. I tried bargaining but they knew we were tourists& as if they want to ask tourist prices. They lose... The market is well stocked with goods from China, Thailand, India and a few local crafts. I guess haggling is part of any market experience so give it a try here too.

Visited the old market. The ground floor full of fruits, vegetables and spices. A lovely smell which reminds you of tropical areas. Could easiky stroll around for hours. The first floor is full of souvenir shops with sales men and women who address you the moment you walk by. If you're not used to that, it can be annoying but... More

We went last month with our children 7 and 4 and it was certainly eye opening for them. We purchased some souvenirs but it's not the best market - I'd suggest going to Rose Hill or Quarte Bourne if you have a car (although you need to check which days they have everything open). Spent a few hours here and... More

We spent an hour here on our visit to Port Louis. It took us 10 minutes to walk here from the waterfront where the taxi dropped us off. You need to make sure you walk towards the underpass which will take you safely under the main road then three minutes and you are at the market. Market is not cheap.... More

During our stay in Mauritius we paid a visit to the central market in Port Louis. It is an interesting place to visit to immerse yourself into the local city, with bargains to be found if you are able to negotiate effectively. The stalls with souvenirs are packed to the brim and many offer the same items, but lure you... More

We took our children here to experience local life in Mauritius. Here locals purchase their fruit, vegetables, spices etc so it is filled with sights and smells you won't forget! Upstairs you will find plenty of tourist merchandise to buy - which you need to bargain for. Some good bargains here as long as you are aware of pricing. A... More
