My wife and I visited Trou aux Cerfs yesterday and started to walk around the crater, after a few minutes a guy who claimed to work for the place came up to us and started telling us things about the crater, we hadn't asked him to do this.
He wore grey trousers, a blue shirt with an official type badge on the pocket, a baseball cap and carried a brown umbrella.
He stayed with us until we were about halfway round the crater, during this time he pointed out a few things then took out a knife and carved off some wood from a Camphor tree, his story then changed from working for them to having worked for them previously but now retired and working as a freelenace tourist guide.
He then wanted money for his 'time as a guide' so we reluctantly gave him 100 MRU, has wasn't very happy with this and said he usually got 10 or 20 Euro. As we had already seen he had a knife we gave him another 100 MRU and walked off as we didn't want any trouble.
The visit to Trou aux Cerfs could have been great as it's a lovely place with amazing views but it was ruined by this guy.
Best advice is just to tell anyone who approaches that you'd rather be on your own.

We had heard a lot about trau aux cerfs and hence were very excited to visit. However overall it was a below expectation experience.
The crater formed due to volcanic eruptions. It's supposed to be filled nice and clean water; however it was filled with weeds and water was just not visible.
The surrounding nature was very good and very serene. Very dense forest in the valley. We had a long walk encircling the crater and it was a very nice and serene experience. Got to see good birds.
Good spot; perhaps our expectations were a bit high

Maybe it used to be better before they put a fence around the perimeter and let the overgrowth happen. It’s just a hole with a mud puddle at the bottom. You get a paved road around the perimeter and sometimes you can see between the trees to see the mud. The weather radar tower is more interesting to look at. This place would still be dull with an active volcano.

Should be a great attraction but the vegetation is overgrown obscuring all but the smallest glimpse from the viewpoint which doesn't extend far enough to see anything 'exciting' (like the bottom of the volcano). Couldn't find any obvious way to walk around the edge and no information boards. Nice views of the rest of the island from there though!

Even more interesting is the nature around. If you look carefully you will find wild grown pineapple, ginger or life saviour trees. There are also „boxing“ trees which are really soft and they were used as paper earlier. And there are two really rare black trees. You will also find a big tower which will warn in case of tycoons and tsunamis sponsored by the Japanese because of overfishing the Mauritius sea back in the past.
Take your time there for a short walk with open eyes and an open mind. There is so much more to see than only a crater.
The best view on the crater you will have maybe 100 meters left of the viewpoint, close to the graves of the slaves that died in the crater.

Everyday in Mauritius, hundreds of Tourists pay a visit to the Extinct volcano namely ( Trou aux cerfs ) french name meaning in English ( Hole of Deer ) & in German ( Loch von Hirsche ) but unfortunately you won't find any Deer..It is found on the central plateau of Mauritius nearly 800 meters high, then 100 meters deep, different from all other volcanoes of the world. The last eruption was in year 1200 approximately, a century before that the Arabian settlers who were sailing to South Africa paid us a visit. The geologists who still have a deep study on our volcano stated that may be the whole island of Mauritius was created by Lava bursting out of the Crater. One can see inside oak trees all around, Couples are allowed to picnic around or sit on benches fixed around. Its a non-residential zone, vehicles are not allowed but has a parking from 50 mts. Nice view to see landscape of Curepipe town & others. Whilst on holidays here in Mauritius a visit is a Must..

It's a volcanic crater. As you walk round the perimeter road, you'll get great views of the surrounding area, and that's probably the main reason for coming here. As it's elevated, it's also a nice cool spot, and it's really popular with local people.
When we visited the toilet block was closed. The only refreshments available was from an ice-cream van.
Don't miss it. The views are splendid, and if you don't live on a volcanic island, it's a rare chance to see a crater. I wouldn't recommend trying to climb down into the crater, a rough path looked unsafe. The crater is lined with trees, and has a grass covered base.
I'd have given it 5 stars, but the total lack of facilities at such a busy spot is a bit of a problem.
It's about 1.5km from Curepipe Botanic Gardens. That's a nice park, but nothing is labelled. Even so while you're in the area you might want to visit it.
About 1.5km away there's Curepipe Botanic Gardens, just about worth a visit

Located a short drive from Curepipe, Trou aux Cerfs is a 605m high dormant volcano. The volcano's cone is well defined with a road that rings around the rim. At different viewing points, visitors can gaze downwards past thick vegetation on the slopes into the water logged crater. Also, the road offers panoramic views of the towns on the plains against a backdrop of the mountain range.
A visit can include a trip to the nearby Curepipe Botanic Garden. During the winter months, Trou aux Cerfs is refreshing with the cold wind.

Trou aux Cerfs is a dormant volcano located in the city of Curepipe. It is easily accesible by car and it is free. Access free, public paid toilet. The views are scenic!

Hi Laura,
Sorry I can answer only in English. Please translate to understand.
Here there is no shelter at all. The place is like isolated. There is no one to take care. It is just a crater with no other facilities.
Regards,
Rajat
