With my father having originated from Malawi, I feast on every inch of Malawian history. My two nieces and nephew took me here. Malawi has a fantastic and fascinating history. The tour guide was very informative with lots of local anecdotes. I didn’t go up but my niece and nephew went up and the views they showed us were good. Please don’t just take our word for it. When in Lilongwe, please do pay this place a visit.

The World War Memorial is set in the same compound as a statue of Hastings Kamuzu Banda. There are some staff who can give one a tour, which is largely just a climb up the inside of the tower. There is no fee, but a tip is expected. There is not lift, one must go up a flight of stairs, before virtually scaling up vertically, on some metal bars to the top. At the top, one can get a good view of Lilongwe; Capital Hill, Parliament, even Bingu Stadium, and the wilderness and greenery that defines Lilongwe.

Never thought there would be such a monument in Malawi. Nice place for an evening stroll after reading what's written in the monuments

This memorial is very nice. The guide was good. We also went up the tower and had a great view there.

Shocking how many died in a war that was not theirs... If you get a chance to climb to the top, do it! The views are fantastic and you learn a lot about the lay-out of Lilongwe

This World war 1 memorial which is located next to Kumuzu Banda statue ( The first President of Malawi) is the best viewing point of the city lookout. From high up, you could see the Parliament, the Stadium and bits and pieces of the city.

Look, I'll be straightforward, there are few sights for the tourist or the resident in Lilongwe. So I think its worth a visit because it is here. This "new" monument replaced the old monument that used to reside near the Kamuzu monument. It commemorates the King's African Rifles, the precursor to the Malawian Defense Force, and their sacrifice during WWI. Sadly some of the plaques were stolen. But basically it's an open square where people come to hang out -- during our visit there were a group of young men happily snapping photos of themselves in front of the monument (and us!), a father and his little one learning to ride her bike, a group of secondary students from Dedza, and various others. Lucky for us a caretaker opened the tower for us to climb up. We made it up the 103 steps and then up one ladder, but given the open nature of the inside stairwell, my daughter is 5, and my active imagination, I decided we would not climb up the final ladders to the open area to look out. The guide was friendly and did not demand any payment, though I gave him 2000 kwacha for his kindness.

The War memorial tower is modern and of little interest, except for the view from the top. Greedy guides bore you with stories, and demand tip afterwards, so try to avoid them.

The memorial itself is visible from the main road. As I got closer the were over a hundred people setting out protesting for something. They didn't block access to the monument the urine smell was strong. I walked around and took some photos. The inside was closed.

A pillar that stands gigantically between Capital Hill the home of Government ministries and, medium density housing area Area 18. It has of late to be tourist attraction for both inernational and local. It provides a quiet rendezvous for young couples as for dating. There is much that could be done. On its inception it looked as an access road into Capital Hill could be made. If it was done it could open accessibility by employees from Capital Hill to enjoy what the place offers during lunch hour.
