It was a great day with very enthusiastic, friendly and helpful tour guides to help us navigate the day and the different businesses and community initiatives that we visited! We learned about an NGO that helps creative, aspiring Liberian filmmakers produce their own film projects and got to sample a couple of the documentaries made. We visited a local Woman who had set up her own flour- and banana crisps- (or chips if you are American) producing venture. Additionally. we visited a local recycling business that pays locals a small fee for any recyclable material brought to their facilities as well as sells bags made of recycled water bags.. We also saw the great work done by a local community leader in West Point whose team uses their free time to try and help their neighbors settle disputes in the local community. In addition, we received a very tasty buffee lunch made up of Liberian dishes as part of the tour. The only reason that I would not give the tour top marks is because two stops that had been promised as being part of the tour were not in the end. It was no fault of the organizers that one of the sights (a ferry made of recycled car parts) had broken down or that the other (a billboard run to inform the community of the latest in current affairs) was closed. However, in anticipation that this might happen I would recommend keeping at least two back-up sight on the schedule to ensure that the participants get their money's worth. Additionally, it would be great if the tour operators worked with the businesses before hand to make sure that they are prepared and have enough of their goods in stock to sell or are ready to sign up new customers to their services for the tour participants when they do come around. However, overall it was a very interesting and fun day which really opened your eyes to the array of business ventures and possibilities in Liberia.

I believe we took the third ever social impact tour. Each tour has been just slightly different, depending on the circumstances. Everything went very well - the places/businesses shown were varied and VERY interesting - giving fantastic insight to "grassroots Liberia". I feel that that particular Saturday is definately one of the best spent in Liberia, and the value for money is great. In addition to meeting some truly courageous and entrepreneurial Liberians, it is also a nice opportunity to meet fellow expats/travellers. As a sidenote, the food that was served was delicious. I only wish there were more items to purchase, as a way to support the activities. Go there!
