Incredible Experience and a Good Way to Experience Life Amongst Locals!
My friend and I went to Addis Ababa for 3 days only, so we had a lot to do and see in very little time. We first debated whether going to the Merkato would be an essential part of visiting Addis Ababa, but after having done it, I can say with confidence that it was very worth it! We are both students and did not have a big budget during our stay there, so we tried to do most things on our own including the Merkato. When we were researching about the best way to visit the Merkato on our own we saw a lot of comments advising us against it because the Merkato is very big, and it could be easy to get yourself lost in there. It was also during this search that we found the phone number of Yared, a tour guide, whose specialty is Merkato tours. We decided to call just to check for prices and availability. Yared was very friendly from the beginning. We told him that we were students and that we wanted to visit the Merkato on that day because it was our last day in Addis Ababa. He not only had immediate availability, but he was very willing to make us a nice tour fit for our budget! The experience was one of a kind. In the Merkato you really see the everyday life of Ethiopians from all over the country. It is very big, loud and full of life. There is too much to see and no map of the Merkato is available, so having Yared with us was indeed the best decision we made so that we could see the nicest parts of it. He guided us through the spices, grains and food sections where he always gave us some time to smell and try a bite of everything. He knew most of the people there, so we were always very welcome. We also saw the incense and herbs sections, the metal section, the section where they produced teff (very famous type of grain in Ethiopia that they use to make one of their most famous dishes: injera), the metal and recycling section, the cheese and butter section and of course an area full of souvenirs (Yared is also helpful for helping you bargain the prices!). He also took us to a nice spot on a rooftop where we had an amazing view of the entire Merkato and could take some nice pictures. He explains a lot of things about the different spots and products and points out the best spots to take pictures. Everyone there will know you are a tourist so don’t be surprised if they stop you and ask you to take a picture with you or if they tell you they love you. They mean well and the best way to reply is always with a smile and with an I love you back. Can you do the Merkato by yourself? I would say yes if you have experience travelling and you have a whole day to get lost in there and then good wifi to be able to find a ride back home once you leave. However, going with Yared definitely made the experience richer as we understood the history behind everything better and we saw the most special and interesting parts of the Merkato. The whole tour took around 2-3 hours. I would 100% recommend visiting the Merkato and 100% more visiting it with the help of Yared! Here is his phone number in case you also want to contact him: +251 96 372 7196.

    Largest market in Africa
We had to come here, as I am a lover of markets, and enjoy seeing the hustle and bustle of all the different kinds of commerce. We drove through on a Sunday when it was not so busy, although it was still packed. In my opinion, they have everything you can think of from mattresses to spices to fresh fruits, clothes, anything you could think of you could find it here. It is not the kind of place I would probably go to on my own as a solo woman traveler just to walk around due to the size of it, and people kept telling us to be careful, but I am glad I got to pass through with someone who knew the area.
Hello! The main thing is that you have a good time. Thank you for your visit.

A market unlike others we have experienced
Had three days in Addis Ababa and wanted to experience the market. Best decision we made was to contact Yared! His is an amazing guide and a great person. His kindness and spirit made our visit to Addis special. The market is massive and a true experience not to be missed. This is not a tourist market! This is a working market for the people of the city, and it was fantastic to be a part of it. Yared is one of a kind and offers a one of a kind experience! We travel all over and the beauty of the market would have been lost without a guide. He responded right away to our WhatsApp message so if you want him to be your guide message him…+251 96 372 7196 Some notes to make your visit better…don’t wear sandals/flip flops. If you want to buy gifts there is a small section of the market with good options. Most certainly have a coffee at the stop Yared takes you to!
Thank you for a pleasant stay. We are sure that one day you will come back and spend together.

    Mercato Guide
Echo the review below. Excellent time with Yared taking me around the market. Very easy, with him picking you up and dropping off. It's huge. You prob could just about do it solo if a confident traveller, but you'd miss lots, and get lost lots. Definitely a plus having someone guide you about and introduce you to lots of the stall holders / workers and explain the dynamics and generally make sense of your senses. This was the only time i had a guide in Addis, and he was full of recommendations beyond the market and helpful tips. Just give him a shout on whatsapp if interested ((+251963727196)

A good guide makes a difference
I recommend you visit the market with a guide because it is a very dynamic and busy place. I connected with Yared through Trip Advisor. We had a lengthy layover in Addis and I wanted to see the city. He picked up two of us in their car. I believe his driver, and childhood friend, is Isaias. They are both extremely nice. Yared's love for his country and people gushes out of him. We had to significantly modify our tour plans due to a health issue, and the market was too challenging for us. I feel that Yared made a difference for us when he adapted to the challenges we had. I am very glad we did this tour and thank Yared for his time and efforts.

Getting the best of the Mercato
Yared was a great guide for our time exploring the Mercato. He’s kind, knowledgeable, friendly. And he knows so many of the business people there - it’s like getting a private tour from the “Mayor of the Mercato!” At the same time, being at the Mercato was bustling and kind of overwhelming. Definitely DO NOT go without a guide! Yared is excellent.
I sincerely thank you for your feedback as it always makes me move forward.

Great tour to the local mercato exoerience!
Yared took us to a brilliant Mercato guided tour. He showed us places we would not have found on our own (and if we would have - we would never have found our way back). We were most interested in experiencing the “real” marker rather than the typical souvenir shopping - and this is exactly what Yared showed us. He took us around the incense section, the spices section, the recycling, the metal section and many more places. He helped us bargain the few things we bought, we got to try to strain teff, and visit a chili “factory”. If you want to stroll around and look at souvenirs this might not be for you (though I’m sure Yared could do that too if you asked before), but if you like an adventure and get a glimpse of the local everyday life this is absolutely you tour to take. We would be happy to recommend Yared to anyone.
Thank you for encouraging me to be the best in the service I provide

    Best guide in Addis
Yared is the best guide in Addis!! Not only did he take me through the Mercato which was one of the coolest experiences of my life, but he also took me out to a jazz club one night, and helped me in a pinch to find some things I needed at a smaller market. Yared went above and beyond all week to make sure I had the best time while visiting Ethiopia. Don’t hesitate to book him!

Amazing experience, but go with Yared.
I am an experienced solo female traveler and I spent 9 days hiking around the Simien and Bale mountains. But between treks I really wanted to see this market. I am so glad I did and it was one of my all time favorite cultural experiences. However, don’t go alone, trust me. Hire a guide. I can pretty much promise you will get lost or you won’t see what makes this market truly special. Yared picked me up, gave a wonderful tour of the whole market, not just the touristy parts. And he takes you to a rooftop where you can see the entire market from above. Hire him, you won’t regret it.

Tugs everyware, the whole place is nasty, price is expensive for forigner so go with at list one Ethiopian, be aware forged purchase specially handmade goods mostly they imported them from China and sell them as authentic pice. over all if you like to see every thing Addis made at one place merkato is a good place you will not have the best experience. but the nastiness and the croud and the million of people in rash is it self one of an experience.

The market is a must see if you have a chance to go to Ethiopia. Its a very unique experience that is worth the time. I highly recommend getting a guide to show you the best places for pictures and the best spices to try. We saw many good reviews about the guide Yared and decided to go with him. So happy we did it was a great experience!

The Merkato is huge, chaotic, amazing. We are definitely glad we went with Mr. Yared, who seemingly knows everyone in the Merkato, which made it fun to feel a bit like a local! He took us exactly where we asked to go, and was very informative about the Merkato's history. He even took us to the only vinyl seller, Abdi Negash Hassen, in Addis (which was outside the Merkato). Our favorite sections were the scrap metal, the spices, the recycling, and the shoes. Be open, smile, shake hands, and have fun! And if someone says they love you, say it back :)

I had an excellent first visit to Mercato, which was greatly enhanced by my local guide Yared. We spent three hours meandering from traditional crafts to an excellent rooftop viewpoint, to spice, grain, and incense areas, to teff and chile mills, to a kocho production area, and on to metal and plastic recycling areas. Although this was just a small sampling of Mercato, Yared was able to use his friendships with many market vendors to provide a much deeper and richer experience than would be possible exploring on your own. I was able to taste many things, try my hand at sifting teff flour, ask questions of Yared and vendors (using him as a translator), etc etc. It was a really great experience, and left me excited to return and continue exploring this amazing market area on my own. Yared speaks good English, has a very easygoing and enthusiastic personality, and wants to make sure you are comfortable while providing an authentic experience. I highly recommend visiting Mercato with Yared. His contact info is +251963727196 WhatsApp and yayehyradt@yahoo.com.

Living in Ethiopia for 8 years, I went to Merkato to buy things, but I didn't know why this market was famous because I always went to the store. However, this time my son visited to Etiopia and wanted to visit Mercato, so while searching the Internet, I found the guide, Yared, and was very surprised to tour Mercato with his guide. He guides us around the place so that I can see all the charms of Mercato, but I don't think I would dare to venture into the 13 square kilometer market without his help.
I want to say sincerely
"Thank you Yared!"
