Like everyone says - you can get a permit on the spot from the tourist office by showing your passport. However, no one asked me for it. If you want to walk here on your own - this is what you do. Buy a map from Crystal Hotel. Turn up the Greater Asmara side. Look up school #1 Keih Bahri. 4 cm west on the map is a green "diamond". There it is. You can definitely walk there from the center, especially if you walk to Fiat Tagliaro. Just continue for 20 minutes. I got my hotel to write on a piece of paper in the local language Tirginya that I was looking for the tank graveyard. Worked fine when I showed people. It's a huge area and I walked around it on the outside first. It's incredible to see the amount of junk.

I don't understand why do you need a special permit to visit this place in Asmara. However, it takes hardly 5 minute to obtain the permit but you DO need it otherwise you will not be allowed. Go to the Ministry of Tourism office at Harnet Street (Opp to the Cathedral) and show them your passport to get a piece of paper, that's it.
This site is full of junk from WW II and everything is stacked on to each other, mostly German made. Take some pictures and you are done.

Lots of folks in Asmara are skinnier than Jack LaLane so a pile of war trash dies not impress me for any reason, especially not when Chinese contractors are ready to pay cash for this junk.

Unusual place worth a stop-by and some rare pictures of military and civil vehicles, a sort of monument to the long absurd war between aggressive Etiopia and poor Eritrea.

I was unfortunately not allowed to go into the grave yard upon my visit, and had to make do with photos from the car.

It is impressive to see a so large quantity of dismissed tanks, trucks, cars, and other war vehicles. The fact that they are rusted and piled up make them appear as a strange monument.

i love my tanks. This graveyard was the seed of sensation. The rust really emphasized the economic downfall of the eritrean government. This is extremely cool. Highly recommend. I am a tanker!

Our study abroad group visited the tank graveyard on a late afternoon to debrief our impressions of Eritrea. The magnitude of discarded military vehicles and equipment gives you an impression of the sheer force of the conflict and if you know a little about military equipment you will be able to spot American, Russian, and other nation's war vehicles. It is an emotional reminder of the senselessness and wastefulness of war.
Make sure to get your permit from the Tourism office. Our group forgot ours and we were turned back. Once you are allowed to enter, you can wander and explore freely.

But don’t forget to get your permit from the tourist centre. You may think you can get by with out it - and just wander around the outside. Sorry you will be followed and waved off. A unique place and well worth the hour it will take to see this.
