I was in Zimbabwe for work and was looking for a last minute weekend trip/activity in the form of a safari or an activity to spend time in the beautiful countryside of Zimbabwe. I came across Varden Safaris and although there had been very heavy rains (February being a particularly wet month) and I only had the weekend to spare,... More

We explored the remote mountains of Mavuradonha Wilderness on horseback. The horses are amazing - sure-footed like mountain goats. On a multi-day camping trip you get deep in the bush and you can see some plains game. The landscape is varied with lush vegetation and streams everywhere even during dry season. The guides "Duggy and Owen" are very knowledgeable and... More

We were a group of 5, with riding experience, wanting to undertake a horse back safari somewhere in Africa and James & Janine Varden's activities in Zimbabwe had been recommended. We were so glad they were. Met at Harare airport, we headed north and after a few hours' drive had arrived at what was formerly a most magnificent farm but... More

We have just got back from a weekend in Mavuradonha with Varden Safaris and i just wish I was back there! James and Janine give their guests a truly authentic and beautiful bush experience. James knows everything there is to know about every bird, plant and animal while Janine gets to know her guests so well that she can the... More

We (2 Swiss girls) spent 2 weeks in Zimbabwe in July. As this was our second trip to Zimbabwe, we wanted to go a bit “off the beaten track” and were therefore looking for a safari company that could suggest to us locations and activities and coordinate everything for us. Pre-travel: I was very impressed by the services provided by... More

It's hard to know where to begin after some amazing experiences on Safaris with Varden Safaris in Zimbabwe. First of all, before leaving for Zim so many people said they did not think it was a safe place to visit - but I had no problems at all. Just use common sense when you're there. I can wholeheartedly recommend Varden... More

A quick 2.5 hour drive north of Harare is Kopje Tops camp, the home base for Varden Safaris in Mavuradonha. The Vardens do horseback safaris, a very different and wonderful way to be out in the Zimbabwean flora and fauna! We are Americans posted in Harare and have traveled in Zimbabwe extensively. Our Varden experience has become a favorite advenutre.... More

Myself and my Partner were in Zimbabwe for 3 weeks in January/February 2014. The trip was mainly to visit family as my Partner is from Zimbabwe now living in the UK but we started our trip with a two day riding Safari with James and Janine at Varden Safaris. It was the perfect way to start our holiday! With our... More

Janine and James Varden are the best - know the bush, care for their horses, and can take you into a magical landscape in Zimbabwe - a really special experience. Despite the rainy season, the unpredictability of the water and electricity, they made my horse safari personal and super fun - I felt like a princess. The food was fantastic,... More

Spent two nights at the Siya Lima farmstay - an easy 2,5 hour drive from Harare. Our highlights included candle lit, delicious meals in the farm house, long rides through beautiful country side with Dougy our knowledgeable guide, seeing Zebra and other wildlife, swimming in natural pools under a water fall and walking the farm and learning the history of...
