For a spot in the Medina that is the last resting place of dozens of Beys and princesses, this royal mausoleum is understated. Reopened in 2023 after some repair work, this 250 year old building is definitely worth a quick visit. The workmanship inside is lovely, and the neat rows of stark white marble sarcophagi give some idea of the size of the royal family. There are some great early B&W photos inside that give some sense of the magnificence of a Bey's funeral. Allow about 20 minutes.

A fascinating glimpse of life in Ottoman times; a beautiful series of vaulted rooms containing the marble sarcophagi of many of the Beys and there families.
We were let in by a charming elderly gentleman who gave us an interesting tour (in French only).
My wife and I walked to the tourbet through the medina in the middle of the day and felt no unease whatever about our safety; most of the people we encountered were schoolchildren.

in a less travelled area. I passed a lot of disgusting garbage filled alleys to get to this place. The streets where nearly deserted being Sunday, so I had an uneasy feeling. Just kept my wits about me though and everything was fine.

Not sure this qualifies as a truly "undiscovered gem", but no one was there when we visited. It's a terrific little sanctuary of crypts of former beys and princesses, adorned with ornate tile work and geometric stone carvings. Highly recommend as a low-key local attraction.

We went to see the cemetery , it was closed but we knocked on the door and the old very nice gate keeper opened the door and allowed us to see this beautiful place and gave us a tour on it’s history and stories . We learned alot about Tunis’s history from learning about the dynasties that ruled it especially the ottoman ruler ( bey’s ) .

Even if it is on the local maps and advertised as an attraction you will never be able to get it. Just like most of the Mosques in Tunis and especially in the Medina is it closed to non-Muslims most of the time. I tried 2 times. Same outcome. I think it is still under renovations. No hours posted, hard to know when is it available. The officials should do better on advising tourists what can be visited or not. They also need updated maps, and starting with the basics, Printing the Tunis map with the geographic North on top of the page not the West direction. Both local maps handed by the Tourist Information centers and the ones you buy from the news stands are the same. I hope someone reads this.

Unfortunatelly closed for restoration with several unsavory types hanging around at the front door. They will offer you a tour but the money would go in their pockets. Following someone in a closed building is also not prudent.
This site is also in an area of the Medina considered a red tourist zone by the police - high danger but mostly from thieves. .

The green tile domes of this mausoleum are lovely. There was renovation work apparently going on and it was closed both times we walked by.

Not a safe place to visit. It is located in a maze and you have to walk through very narrow alleys and there are no tourists around. I went there twice and it was always closed and when a local guy saw me there, he said "are you crazy? It is a very dangerous here. Someone died here last week. Leave here. You also need to hide your cell phone because they snatch it all the time." If you really really want to visit here by taking a risk, go with friends. DO NOT go to this place ALONE.
