St. Joseph's Catholic Cathedral is one of the most important historical buildings in Stone Town. It was built by French missionaries at the end of the 19th century and is based on the cathedral of Marseille.

Its two twin bell towers stand out in the city's skyline.

It is the temple of worship of the Catholic population of the island.

Very surprising to see such a large church quietly hidden amongst the narrow streets of Stonetown. A very nice working church with open doors to visitors. Perhaps not as open as it could be as the main gate in front of the main doors is locked, as is a side gate. Access was down an alley at the rear, a full block around the back. Not spectacular inside, just a very nice church with a distinctly African colour to it.

The mass times on Sunday for this church are:
1) 7:00am
2) 9:00am
3) 4:30pm

The mass at 9:00am (which I attended) was conducted in Kiswahili. Not sure about the other times.

The Roman Catholic cathedral of St. Joseph is one of the most important historical buildings in Stone Town, Zanzibar, as well as one of its main visitor attractions. The church is regularly used by the local Catholic community, with several masses being held each Sunday and occasionally on weekdays.

We are Catholic and so the primary reason for our visiting the Church was to worship at Sunday Mass. Having said that, it is a beautiful church and the tiled floor is I think especially worthy of mention. 7am Mass is in English and 9am in Swahili. The priest gave an excellent sermon - more and more uncommon these days. If you are Catholic this is your parish!

I attended the 9am mass, which is in Kiswahili. The unexpected part is that the mass took two hours; it seemed this is the normal routine, so if you are going to the 9am, plan for that. But staying the full two hours is so worth it, because they have an AMAZING choir! This is the first time I've heard a church using hymns in an African language and style but accompanied by an organ, and it's fantastic. I run the music program for my parish in Kinshasa, so this was a very special treat for me. I had to pull out my iPhone and record some of the music to share with family at home.

If you're looking for an English mass, I'd guess the 7am is a good bet. When I arrived at 8:30, there were several Indian families and a couple other ethnicities milling around who had attended the earlier service. Don't know anything about the 4:30pm mass.

This church is unfortunately closed most of the time and the best time to visit it is for interested tourists to go during the mass. The building is quite beautiful and if you do not wish to participate in the mass just sit for 5-10 min in a pew and admire the interior.

The church is located in midst of stone town mazes, with an ambiance of an old Arabic culture, friendly neighborhood, just scenic for day time photography.

St. Joseph’s Cathedral is a Roman Catholic Church in the Baghani area of Stone Town in Carhedral Street. It is an important historical building which was built by French missionaries between 1893 and 1898. Its twin spires are similar to those of Marseille’s church. The cathedral interior is painted with murals from the Old Testament, many of which have deteriorated over time. The cathedral is in regular use by the Catholic community of Stone Town.
