This church is quite striking from the exterior. That's all you're going to see. The interior is only open during services (even though the doors are open and no one is around). A guard will come and back at you not to enter.

A quiet peaceful resting point in the lower area of Dar. Open to the public during non-worship times, very welcoming.

The Azania Front Lutheran Church is a Lutheran church in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, serving as a cathedral for the local diocese. It is among the most well-known landmarks and tourist attractions of the city. It is in the city center, close to the ocean, facing the harbour. It was built by the German missionaries in 1898, in the Bavarian style of the time, with a red-tiled roof, tiled canopies over the windows and bright white walls

Go on a Sunday morning and listen to the amazing choirs.
The sanctuary reminds one of its German heritage. The stained glass windows are beautiful. Ask someone in the church if you can go up to the bell tower, up there is a wonderful view of the city and harbor.

The church stands pretty much the way it stood at its inauguration in 1899, the altar is made of dark tropical wood and the carving says

"I leave you the peace and I give you mine" which is a word game towards the translation of Dar es salaam - which is "house of peace"

Worth a visit, if locked guide will open for interested tourists.

In a busy multicultural working City this church is such a beautiful calm oasis. Beautiful outside, clam and relaxing inside. Great place to pop and and spend a few moments in reflective contemplation

Popped by on a Sunday afternoon whilst sightseeing in the city. Beautiful architecture, totally different to its surroundings. Popped in side - there was a band playing and singing. Very cool vibes

I went to visit this church a few years ago with my cousin who was on vacation in Tanzania. He is a pastor, so I thought it would be interesting to see this historic church. And it was really interesting! Especially going up in the bell tower- we paid a little extra for our private tour up the bell tower and it was really worth it!

An active working church and worth a visit for its historic significance in Dar es Salaam. Services are to be found in both Kiswahili and in English.
