I traveled with my adult son and teen daughter and we each found something we loved at the Tingatinga Arts cooperative. Adamson's #007 had authentic wood carvings, ceremonial knives, and portraits, and the stalls on both sides had collectables as well. We went three times and would have stayed longer (and shopped more) if they had a place to eat and relax.

This cooperative society hosts several different painters. You can see artwork being created before your eyes. The artists are friendly and the art is interesting. No one minds pictures being taken. A worthwhile experience even if you are not in the art market.

Loved the art at this co-operative society. Large variety of styles and size of paintings. Very reasonable prices, even pre-bargaining.

A helpful English speaking representative guided me around the place. While all the art is mostly canvas mounted on frames, he told me they could take it off the frames, so it could fit easily inside a suitcase.
Unfortunately, they only accept cash and I wasn't carrying any as I had just landed in Tanzania and I didnt have the opportunity to return - but will definitely go back on my next trip to Dar Es Salaam.

We went yesterday with my two friends, there welcoming is so good. And everyone there is kind-heartedly, I found that people have too much talent in painting. There work is so beautiful and we bought some paintings, they are not so costful. I had chit chat with some of the workers, they are so nice. I liked the place and it's a good place to visit.

We strolled along a row of art/painting shops which is located at a place called Tinga Tinga
Arts Co-Operative Society. Once inside the building, the entire room is displayed
with paintworks, glassware/pottery, carved wood objects & few textiles pieces too. .
It was interesting to see artisans in action painting their own piece of artwork/craftwork
in every corner of the room.
Moreover we find that we take our time to view every individual piece of artwork on display, no
one seems to push us for a purchase.
This little art & craft sale gallery cum workshop is worth a visit if you are ever in Dar Es Salam.

You'll find Tinga Tinga paintings and related gifts all over Dar es Salaam and Zanzibar, but the Tinga Tinga Arts Co-operative had the widest range and best quality of all the ones I saw - paintings here were of noticeably better quality than others I saw being produced and sold in other locations. As well as more traditional styles featuring the big five, there were also paintings of lively street scenes, and even scenes from the National Hospital, Muhimbili (also available as an animal version with a lion giving birth and a giraffe having an injection!)
You can meet the artists and commission your own painting, which will usually take about 5 days to be ready. Prices are not fixed so you can haggle if that's your shopping style. In comparison with some of the other souvenir markets you are able to browse the co-operative without being hassled to look at everything by overenthusiastic traders.

Others have criticised this place as 'just for whiteys', which is probably largely accurate as many Tanzanians cannot afford art... But this is a collective of artists and, I believe, worth supporting. Some great works, very reasonably priced. Much respect to the painters, who are simply trying to make a living from their talent.

We had heard about this artist location and we visited it with a guide. You can meet the artists or simply look at all of the unique paintings. You’ll see these paintings in other places in Tanzania including Zanzibar. Here, you have a chance to meet the artists and you will save money since the art is being created here so there is no need to have another markup after selling to a retail location. We sure to bring local currency or be aware of the currency exchange for USD. The artists will take either.

This was part of a city tour. We hired a driver who also doubled as a guide. We found him through our hotel and he was amazing. He runs his own tour company called Alex’s Tanzanian Adventures. He made all the arrangements for us on many different tours and he was terrific. You can contact him for availability at ntukulaalex@gmail.com.

We visited Tinga Tinga as part of a city tour of Dar Es Salaarm. The art work was lovely to look at and also to watch the various artists at work. There was not much more to see in this area.
