When visitors arrive in Tanzania they will be told about this beach. Unfortunately it is not the best beach in Dar es Salaam as it has a lot of rubbish, plastic bottles, tyres, old clothes, fishing nets, different flotsam and jetsam.
The other problem is that the beach gets overcrowded. If at all you want a little bit of social distancing (during the pandemic) this is not possible unless one goes at odd hours when I am told it can be a little dangerous.
The ocean has some waves, the scenery is good but the management needs to greatly improve the facilities.
If you have three days in Dar es Salaam (with a few more days in Zanzibar) I suggest:
Day 1] Spend time at one resort (suggest Ramada in Kunduchi) just for a night with a sea facing room;
Day 2] Spend one day visiting Mbudya and Bongoyo - you will get your best quota of Sand and the Indian Ocean. Boat Rides can be arranged by Ramada. We had an excellent snorkeling guide for Mbudya by the name of Mohamed and hadlunch here with fresh Red Snapper and fries (inform them in advance). We covered Bongoyo on the same day.
Day 3 (take a city tour of Dar es Salaam to know more of the city and end the day watching a beautiful sunset from Msasani Slipway which by itself is a vibrant place with many restaurants, saloons, stores etc.). You can also by souvenirs here.
Also do try to have a light lunch at Karambazi Restaurant in Sea Cliff Hotel which offers a magnificent view of the Indian Ocean.

Coco beach is great and vibey...went to Wavuvi Kempu and enjoyed the music, the dancing, the food and drinks. Famous for sunrise parties...loved the place. Not far from our base camp.

We had been to coco beach during our holiday trip and it felt as if that is the place, we are closest to nature. The beach is so beautiful and relatively clean. The cruise was a wonderful experience with all the cultural dances. My favorite beach it was so calm and beautiful. Coco beach will be my first choice always whenever I want a getaway.

Gorgeous beach and views and has much more potential if only the businesses owners got together to beat the rubbish for good. It's nice to sit on sand but not when you are sharing a space with a dirty nappy, used bottles and other debris. Shame! DAR es Salaam can definitely do better. Charge the people who use this gorgeous beach as rubbish tip!

This is a beach that is also known as Kingamboni that is a great choice from many of the local people. It has a white sand and clear water. It is good for swimming and has many places to enjoy the beauty of the beach.
Our guide told that Coco come after coconut trees in that place.

I met a friend at Coco Beach for dinner and watching her children frolic in the water. I was pleased with the fried fish dish that I ordered. It was both tasty and promptly delivered. Plenty of locals enjoying the gentle waves, made for good entertainment.

Coco Beach can be a bit dirty depending on when it rained last, but it is best early in the morning and/or at low tide.
My advice though, skip the actual beach portion, and take a walk along the cliffs from Sea Cliff to Golden Tulip. If you start at Sea Cliff and head out towards the last helicopter pad, you will find some very large tires marking the start of a lovely 2 km walk along the cliffs. There is a trail marked out by fishermen that leads basically all the way to Golden Tulips on the other side. I run this route with my dog (off the leash) 3 times per week. There is a nice sea breeze, very few people and stunning views. This is the nicest green space in the city.
I must also say, thought I've been walking and running here for over two years, it probably can be unsafe. I recommend not taking any valuables, not even your phone and definitely don't go any time past dusk. I have ran with an ipod and watch, and never met any issues, but you never know.

If you are staying in Dar and don't want to get on a boat to see an island beach you should take some time and visit coco beach. When I went the tide was out so there was a lot of trash and seaweed that washed up on the beach but I was told that the beach is clean when it is high tide.
There are a few nice places to sit in the shade and have a beer or 3. People will come around selling nuts and chips so if you just want a snack and a beer this is a good place. Lots of people watching and everyone I spoke with was very friendly.
Was told that if you go alone you should not swim in the water unless you have someone to watch your things while you are swimming. I guess you could get a water bag to swim with as an alternative.
Don't expect ritzy here. Is a limited frills locals beach that is free and open to the public.

I went to Coco beach in Dar es Salaam in January and it was great to see all the local people there. But that was really the only highlight. The beach is literally a garbage dump. I've never seen anything like it. Absolutely disgusting. Maybe it's not always like that but when I was there it was. And if you compare that to places like Moshi and Tanga that are super clean there shouldn't be any need for it to be so dirty. Also the sea is as hot as your pee and it's full of sea urchins and green weeds. It's not the locals' fault the beach is so dirty as there are absolutely no trash cans to be found. So maybe Coca Cola can invest in sponsoring trash cans instead of beach showers.

here is the nearest beach for people living in downtown and oyster bay but it's not the best because here is not clean and you can't swim here. if you like swim you should drive to north beaches of DAR or go to Kigamboni that I think second one is better. here you can walk on beach or test some traditional food same as fried Casava or beef mishkaki. specially on weekends you can see many local and foreigner people here and become very crowd.
