There is so much to experience .best to visit in early hours as fishermen just get back from the sea. The boats arrive during night time also. Morning hours get crowded with majority of people wanting to buy the sea products at cheap prices. While you cab shop for , shrimp, lobster , cuttlefish , kingfish, shrimp and others. This is the best place to shop for fish with very reasonable prices.

I’m a big market fan, so keep that in mind. However, I loved this place. Fishermen landing on the beach and flogging their catch. Traders furiously buying at auction. I loved it. It’s pretty full-on (even at 1pm) and it’s very much a local, working market. The array of sea food was fantastic and I’m sure you could get stuff cheaply if you’re willing to engage in some bartering.

This is a must see if you have the stomach for it. I think this is a very important place in the city you see the fisherman and crew bringing the days catch from boat to market. There is also kitchens to cook the food. It is a very interesting place to see.

This is a real place within the heart of the city that people make their living from. There are three zones of the market, the place where they transfer the fish from boats to selling dock, the place where they sell the fish, and the place where they fry the fish to sell. If you go here in the morning, expect a lot of hustle and bustle. It is genuine local market.

We arrived after dark in a weekend where area was packed with locals. Our guide scared me to care for my belongings like mobile, camera and wallet. Actually it’s fish and vegetable market. People put their stuff on the street for selling. Mangos is small and hard but sweety. Different kinds of fish and seafood so buy or to eat. Friendly people when you are escorted by guide.

The Fish Market has nothing spectacular unless one wants to buy fresh fish. The place is too crowded, very noisy and vendors can easily cheat you to buy fish that are not fresh. After the recent experience where I got cheated on the quality of fish, I have decided not to go here again.

Awesome fish market that is SUPER primitive and cool to walk around. Our taxi driver found us a man to walk us around the market and show us everything, it was super cool… crazy bad smell though. Would not recommend to a tourist without a guide or local to guide them.

I came here not to buy fish, but to watch the fishermen bring their catches in. There were a few other locals here who did indeed come here to buy and eat the fresh fish. I mingled with the people and took in the sights and atmosphere. Very interesting.

As others have mentioned, this place can be very busy, very crowded, very smelly, very hot and humid but it reflects the reality of the Tanzanian fishing industry. The 'processing' area across the road mustn't be missed, although it really is very hot and humid and also very smoky. Be careful - some of the workers there took aggressive exception when I started taking photographs, even of just the general area and not particularly them. There seemed less offence being taken when photographing in the auction and unloading areas.

I agree that it is an ideal operating area for pickpockets and watch out for unofficial 'guides' too who may expect to be paid handsomely. Mind you, I don't think there are actually any official guides.

I was warned not to enter the areas on the beach where fish drying and unloading was taking place, as this is apparently a hotbed of pickpockets and guides who will rip you off.

I visited late morning but there was still plenty of activity, although most of the boats had unloaded their catches by then. Early morning would be better, for all sorts of reasons. Don't expect to see many other foreigners or tourists and bear that in mind if you feel uncomfortable in such situations.

Busy and smelly place, since it is a fish market. A beautiful melt with locals and local culture. Do the tour of the market, see what is on offer and definitely try a local fish speciality. Do not get discouraged by the smell, the food is clean and good! People eat in big tables, so just grab your fish soup and join one of them. Food is cheap - don't pay more that 1000 Tsh per person.
