Wandering through the medina allows one to step back in time, getting lost among the streets that have been winding through this old city for centuries. In Morocco’s efforts to modernize and upgrade, many ongoing improvements can be seen.

If you enter without a guide, be prepared to be approached constantly. Some may even start walking with you, whether you invite them to do so or not. It may seem rude at first, but be firm and clear if you do not want to have any of these experiences.

To make everything simpler and more enjoyable, I highly recommend booking a guide before you arrive. We were able to experience the medina with and without a guide, and the difference was night and day. With the guide, we were able to enjoy the experience with almost no “offers.” When we tried it on our own, we could hardly take 25 steps between “offers.”

Having said all that, it was an amazing experience!

I absolutely loved the medina in Tangier! The locals are all so warm and welcoming. The shops are stunning. I've never seen such displays of color. I especially love the shoes baskets of spices and huge watermelon. Beside the market I also visited the Casbah, downtown plaza, American Legion and the Cave of Hercules on my tour day. In fact, I loved my experience so much, and while there, heard about this other place called the Blue City (Chefchaouen), so I hired Nabil to take me there 2 days later for another day trip.
Though traveling alone, I felt safer than when alone in the US. My tour guide Nabil was very gracious in every way. He is obviously well known and respected by so many in the community, so I felt that I could trust him. He saw to my needs, even my quirky ones like allergies/dining, and helped me to barter for better prices (the shoes! and some silver rings). He explained many things about the local history and muslim religion so I better understood our different cultures. Had the time of my life and will return! If you want an amazing, non-pushy guide, contact Nabil of Tangier Private Customized Tours on TA or +212 700 704 644 on whatsapp.

We booked a wonderful day with Nabil Sayed and his company ( Tangier Customized Private Tour ) to the Ancient Medina of Tangier. The Medina in Tangier is a maze of blue and white buildings with beautiful doors with hobnails and trident hardware to ward off evil. It has a wonderful market place with all kinds of offerings from dried nuts & fruits to butchered ram head ready to cook. The fruits and vegetables are beautiful and fresh and the meats and fishes freshly cut and filleted. Venders are hawking everything from clothing to shoes and pocketbooks made from soft goatskin leather.

A walk around the Medina is a must and very enjoyable in the evening. With the pandemic, tourists are rare so we did get frequently approached but most of it was good natured. We bought a tea pot, decorative tajines and a couple of sweatshirts all at a good price,
The views at night are great and remember to stop off for a mint tea!!

A visit to the ‘old town’ or “Medina” of Tangiers is guaranteed to be interesting and eclectic. Here is where you will find a bit of everything: shops of spices, trinkets, argon products, foods, rugs, etc…. Plus you’ll see the many interesting people who either are selling their wares or buying them. A guide is most helpful if for no other reason than to help navigate your way around. The history is fascinating and the people watching is fantastic.
There are lots of steps and uneven surfaces so watch your footing. Wheelchairs and scooters will not be able to navigate around. You’ll also be offered every trinket known to God and man….and ‘negotiating’ is expected. It’s a fun place and after two years of not seeing anyone the people seem thrilled for tourists.

It was so nice to stroll through the medina. There is so much to see there. You can see the restaurant from the Jason Bourne movie and also see the place where he jumped from building to another building. A real beautiful area. The people all know you are a stranger there but they leave you alone.

Here I drop only for seeing Gibraltar and connection border of Atlantic and Mediterranean is nearly 2 hour far from the city. Madinah (old city center) of Tangier is small one compare to other cities of Morocco. Day trip would be enough to see all city attractions.

Ali gave us an excellent tour of the old part of the city. Lunch was excellent. We walked much of the alleys of the old town. A lot of unique shops to look for special remembrances of the city.

Colourful and bustling medina. Wear good walking footwear as the medina is steep and hilly. Some great historic stopping off points. The petit socco being one. The square in front of kasbah is superb. A visit to the palace is well worth it. Some lovely restaurants with great views.

If you're looking for an experience in Tangier you have to visit the Medina. You'll find all sort of things there. Just beware that everyone will try to sell you everything. It's just like in the movie Aladdin. My friends and I went on a trip to Tangier we were lucky to find 2 guys from there that showed us around and took us shopping. They were able to get us really good prices -beware because they will try to rip you off if they know you're an 'outsider' and believe me they know. Overall you can negotiate just about anything and even if you decide not to purchase anything it's still a great experience.
