This was a fabulous to explore the real artisans of the Fes medina. Many shops sell the same, often mass-produced items, and it can be hard for foreigners to find authentic, quality handicrafts. Our guide, Mohammed, was a life-long resident of Fes and had deep, friendly relationships with artisans in numerous workshops. He used our interests to craft a tailored tour. While we never felt pressure to buy, he also helped us identify where we did want to make purchases, and even stepped in to help us haggle a better price at one location. We came away from the tour with many memories and select, now cherished items. This is the best way to see the medina properly!

This was really a great tour in Fes. Our guide was accurate and answered in a precise way to all our questions. We did meet several artisans and it was a pleasure talking with them and learning by them, without any pushing to buy something. We, me and my wife, appreciated also the artisans were paid for the time they dedicated to us. Thanks for the great experience.

What a remarkable experience to enjoy in Fes! Jess and her fellow facilitators are both quite knowledgeable about and well respected by the artisans whom we visited. The fact that Jess speaks Arabic also makes the meetings with these artisans far more seamless than we had expected.

You can ask the artisans all the questions which you wish, and the artisans are very open to explaining their methods, their histories and their sources. A great aspect of these tours is that Jess will tailor your itinerary to which crafts are of most interest to you. It is NOT a preplanned route, thankfully. It is also NOT a tour intended to take you just to shops where you are expected to buy items. No, you go to the actual workshops, and not the retail shops instead--much more interesting, informative and with no buying hassles encountered along the way.

And, if you would like, Jess will take you on a separate tour to the training center in Fes where the government is training young men and women in the traditional crafts of Morocco. This is the only way that future artisans will be trained and can continue in the footsteps of those master artisans who are aging, unfortunately.

A "must do" set of tours!

Thank you Richard and Jill. Connecting you both with the artisanship was a pleasure. Your respect for the crafts, skills, people and culture makes this project all the more important and engaging.

We were lucky to be part of a group of like minded people travelling through Morocco from Tangier, Fez, Sefrou, over the plains and through the Atlas Mountains, to Marrakesh. Jess and Keryn, who guided the group, are experts both in Moroccan textiles, culture and language and facilitated many varied experiences, workshops and visits to artisans in a two week tour. Information was provided prior to the trip that helped with assimilation and talks with local experts during our stay added extra understanding and colour. A fully immersive trip, off the tourist routes, meant that there are many opportunities to engage with locals, both in the many kasbahs, mountain villages and womens co-operatives. Stayingin comfortable hotels, riads and ancient Kasbah throughout, together with with great food and gracious people ensured that this tour is a life enhancing experience, well planned organised and led. Thank you, Jess and Keryn.

We were fortunate to have two in-depth Culture Vultures-Artisanal Affairs Day Tours in Fez and Sefrou. Mohammed, a lifelong resident of Fez, guided us on a meaningful experience in the Fez Medina. He had a respectful approach to communicating with the artisans and we felt comfortable asking questions. This was a learning experience with no pressure to buy anything. Mohammed was sensitive to the needs of our group and moved at a comfortable pace, stopping for lunch when we were obviously hungry. I will never forget some of the gifted artisans we met. Our day in Sefrou was led by Jess, an artist who has lived many years in Morocco and is passionate about saving these ancient crafts and introducing the artisans to people interested in art and preserving heritage. She is fluent in Moroccan Arabic and respected in Sefrou. We enjoyed the slower pace in Sefrou and the experience of meeting more artisans. Our group was very impressed with a weaver who had built his own loom and made beautiful blankets. Jess also arranged for lunch outside an alley cafe that we all very much enjoyed.

This was a wonderful day spent in deep conversation with Ali, my guide through artisan workshops in Sefrou. There’s a great deal of personal attention, and in particular if you show up with specific questions or areas of curiosity, your initiative will be rewarded. Provided a wonderful in-depth window into the craftwork of the artisans we visited, and gave me great context for the details to pay attention to in their work. A great experience across the board!

We arranged for a five day artisan tour in Sefrou with Jess. During our tour we visited weavers, wood carvers, button makers & several others within the Sefrou Medina. One day we traveled to a mountain village where they were having their weekly market to meet up with the woman carpet makers. It was quite the cultural experience as well as appreciating the work these women do in making their carpets. On another day we visited another community of women button makers. We ate lunch with them & their family. Such a rich experience in the kindness & generosity extended from these Moroccan people. Our last day of the tour included visiting different artisans in Fes. Many of these old crafts are dying out for lack of young people carrying on the crafts. I am very happy to have been acquainted with these artisans & encourage others to visit.

This tour and visit with artisans in Fes was the highlight of our trip to Morocco. Our guide, SAdiqi, was extremely knowledgeable and really catered the experience to our interests and needs. He shared about a large variety of topics The opportunity to try sharpening metal tools with a foot-powered grinding wheel, and to share coffee with a master leather worker and his apprentice with SAdiqi as translator and facilitator is some of the most personal cultural immersion I have ever experienced while on a relatively short visit. Although the tour lasted only about 4 hours, it completely changed my perspective on how and where Moroccan crafts are made and introduced us very briefly to the daily routines of master craftsmen, many of whom are among the last of their trade.

Many thanks for taking the time to write a review. We are delighted that your Fez artisan connection seemed meaningful and insightful. The culture of the traditional crafts and its gatekeepers are some of Morocco's true gems.

Recently returned from Textile Quest and was entranced with the careful curation of our experiences. We traveled through Morocco visiting artisans, textile workers, carpet makers, and were invited to join in lively conversations about promoting and sustaining makers at a time when their craft and supply chain has become challenging to sustain. The experience was immersive, heartfelt, hands-on, and FUN! Bring an open mind and a sense of community. You will not be disappointed with the travel, food, places to stay, or the chance to purchase and support the artisan society. Jess and her team could not have been more indulgent and helpful. GO!

French/American citizen, I grew up in Morocco where I spent the first 18 years of my life. I have just returned from a 2 weeks trip there with family and friends (total 10 people)after 25 years. On of the highlights of the trip was this tour of the Medina in Fez. I had been in this Medina before and got lost even with local guides… the main difference of this tour is that it focuses on the crafts and the men behind them… Amazing interaction.. great experience. Jess is super easy to work with. Strongly Recommended!!

Engaging respectful and curious people with the crafts people in their working environment is utter joy. Many thanks for bringing you group closer to the pumping heart of Fez medina and for spending time to write a review.
