Yes, it smells pretty terrible, but this is a must see in Fez. Using mint to mask the odor really doesn't work, so just be prepared. We paid 20dh to the guy who procured us as patrons. We did not buy anything in his shop, but a very interesting experience that is worth your time.…

This is a rather interesting but quite unpleasant place to visit. They make leather from animal hides and the process is extremely laborious, and in the end expensive for the buyer! The place literally stinks, as the smell is unavoidable due to the nature of the manufacturing process. However as happens in such establishments, group visitors, especially, are regularly forced to buy items made on site. We visited on our own and had a look around but did not buy anything. The view and quick tour are not to be missed. But buyer be very beware. We bought a few bags which absolutely reek. My eyes water from the smell so I doubt I will be able to use the bags for quite a while. As another reviewer mentioned, you do not notice the smell while visiting. We paid nearly 100 euros each for small purses - which turned out to be of bad quality. They are machine stitched and even the leather is not very nice. Finally - we were terrible negotiators and really gotten taken but were too overwhelmed to bargain or say no. Be willing to stand your ground and walk away. The bags will be charming once they do not smell so bad and will give us a chance to tell a great story about Morocco. So go and learn about the amazing place - but be very careful about buying. …
