Yes, it smells pretty terrible, but this is a must see in Fez. Using mint to mask the odor really doesn't work, so just be prepared. We paid 20dh to the guy who procured us as patrons. We did not buy anything in his shop, but a very interesting experience that is worth your time.

This is a rather interesting but quite unpleasant place to visit. They make leather from animal hides and the process is extremely laborious, and in the end expensive for the buyer! The place literally stinks, as the smell is unavoidable due to the nature of the manufacturing process. However as happens in such establishments, group visitors, especially, are regularly forced to buy items made on site. We visited on our own and had a look around but did not buy anything. We managed to avoid any pressure buying. If you are not sure or don't want to spend too much, then don't take your money (or credit card, or whatever) with you!

I read lots of complaints about the smell.... well yes it can stink, they are after all stripping hide in vats in the sunshine so really - what do you expect. This isn`t the cosy west! For a sheer appreciation of this very ancient process do go. It will cost you nothing You see the full process you will be astonished about how something from the tanks turns into something of beauty However, whilst the workmanship is undeniable the costs were expensive. Fine for a special gift perhaps but there are better prices elsewhere and also in Fez But dont miss this or the donkeys carrying hides through the streets either

This is the third review I write about it. The main idea is that the smell is horrible and you will get scammed.

The view and quick tour are not to be missed. But buyer be very beware. We bought a few bags which absolutely reek. My eyes water from the smell so I doubt I will be able to use the bags for quite a while. As another reviewer mentioned, you do not notice the smell while visiting. We paid nearly 100 euros each for small purses - which turned out to be of bad quality. They are machine stitched and even the leather is not very nice. Finally - we were terrible negotiators and really gotten taken but were too overwhelmed to bargain or say no. Be willing to stand your ground and walk away. The bags will be charming once they do not smell so bad and will give us a chance to tell a great story about Morocco. So go and learn about the amazing place - but be very careful about buying.
