Really I'd like to give it 2 1/2 circles, it's not quite poor, but below average. It's been a few years since our last visit and the place needs work. Admission is $8 for everyone 4 and up (seniors are a little less, $6 I think), which is a lot if you are getting there at 1PM and the place closes at 3PM. It would be nice if they offered discounted admission after noon or 1.

Many activities my children wanted to experience, were closed for "upgrading" and of the ones left, a few didn't work properly. The outside area was not open so we went from exhibit to exhibit and my kids were bored after an hour.

The honeybee hive that was previously on the 2nd floor is gone, as is the room in the basement painted to make you feel like the room is shrinking/slanted.

They have a wind attraction that simulates what it feels like to be in a 78 mph tornado, but that is an extra $2. On the plus side, on street parking was free.

If you'd like a nice little children's museum that focuses on learning, I'd suggest the Discovery Museum in Rockford. Yes, it is farther, but the admission is the same $8, they are open until 5PM, parking is free and your kids will be engaged all day.

I have been here several times in the last few years, most recently with a kindergarten field trip. It is a nice museum and everything (that works) is hands on. The age range of my children is preschool through early elementary and it was hard for all of them to pay attention to the same thing. If you have a ratio of one adult: one child, then you will find it a nice place to spend a few hours...not more than two or three hours. If in my case, you have several children with a wide range of abilities it is not so nice...most of the exhibits require reading and explanations...perfect for 2nd grade and up, or a patient child with a parent totally devoted to them. If you have a child who wants to push every button and then runs away before they even see what happens -- the kids will soon grow frustrated. There is a great area for small (5 and under) kids that is suited for them, but older kids are not allowed and would be bored if they were. Our wide range of ages and me being there solo was frustrating.

A plus: it is SMALL. I could see my oldest from almost any part of the museum so I allowed them to wander a bit while I stayed with the little ones in the tot zone. I literally could see them the entire time.

A minus: it is SMALL. Get a coupon. Save money and don't visit at full price!

Thank you so much for visiting our museum in 2012! I am the new Director of Operations at SciTech Hands on Musuem and I am personally reaching out to our visitors. We are currently in the process of seeking grant funding to expand our museum that has been open to the public since 1987. By April 2014 we will have added 2 brand new exhibits that no other museum in the state currently has! Also, the Dunham Fund has generously donated to our organization to expand the area you spoke of for the younger learners. It will be renamed Nano-Vation Labs and will feature many new exhibits specifically designed for our young scientists! Please feel free to keep an eye on our Facebook page for updates and I hope that you visit us again this Summer! My name is Camille Coller, do not hesitate to call with any questions regarding the future we have in mind!

This museum is an hour+ from our home and still worth the drive. It is housed in an old post office--probably built in the 30's. If you are used to gleaming exhibits and modern halls, this will be a change. Many of the hands on materials are worn because, well, there's been many hands on. Much of the plexiglass surrounding machines is scratched. None of this detracts from children's attainment of science concepts. Many children's museums go a mile wide and an inch deep--not this one. SciTech goes a mile deep when it comes to scientific demonstrations. Many of the exhibits have the feel of prize-winning science fair projects. I'm certain some were designed by students. That may very well be why this place seems so accessible to young minds. It is worthwhile for elementary and even middle school students. There's a preschool area too but this is not the main focus (a refreshing change, actually). Just beware of the hours. It closes EARLY (3 pm).

Oh what a poor attempt to serve the needs of kids and science. Poorly kept. Exhibits are old and out of date. That's not to say that learning is not taking place here. The people who run this place must be doing so as a hobby. Little professionalism is evident. The place feels like it is lacking resources and financial support. You can spend your money elsewhere and get a much better bang for the buck. Really? Really!

Aurora should be investing more money in this worn-aged jewel of a museum. After a brief unfortunate negative first impression with the employee working at the ticket desk who seemed interested telling me about the outdated computer system than providing pleasant customer service. Which almost cause my family to walk out and go to downtown Chicago for a top notch museum. I spoke with the manager who was very professional and pleasant, she also convinced me to try the museum. She offered a full refund due to the experience. I declined since it is a non for profit entity.

Glad I did, my youngest had a blast. Though my young teen and twelve year old tolerated the worn, tired exhibits.

This museum is really for toddler to age 10/11 yrs group. I must admit this is Children's Museum with Science Focus. Not for all ages.

So, Aurora.... I suggest investing in this museum before it's too late!

By the way, free parking for 6 hours located on the side of museum.

I remember going to this place as a child some 20 years ago and I remember loving it. There were a lot of the same exhibits there, and now that I am a bit older I still thought they were pretty interesting. The staff was helpful and the cost isn't unreasonable. Our two year old had quite a good time, my only complaint is that since there are so many children running about the exhibits get quite filthy. I am not afraid to get a little dirty, but some things were sticky (mainly in the toddler area) and for a little one that is a recipe for getting ill. Understandably the staff can't run around and clean up after every child, but they are about due for a good old deep clean. Still worth the trip, the kids find plenty of things to do to keep them happy and frankly so do the adults.

We had our son's birthday there. The party was fine but the staff of the museum did not seem to understand kids do not drive themselves to birthday parties especially when they are 8. They wanted to charge us for any parent who came to pick up their kid. There were fathers who were texting in the lobby bored to death watiing for the the party to end so they could go home and the museum lady wanted me to pay for their entry ticket because - gosh -one touched an exhibit on the way in while waiting for his kid to get in because they were late and they were not allowed to join the presentation downstairs.

Very unpleasant to negotiate with the museum lady at the party trying to make her understand parents could care less about their exhibits and were there to pick up their kid. The museum is in the middle of nowhere in Aurora and it is hard for parents to find errands to run there so they might stick around and double your party cost - beware. We ended up paying for 6 more people we had not planned to pay for.

I apologize for any inconvenience you experienced during the Birthday Party you booked here in August 2013. I am the new Director of Operations and while I was not on staff at the time this happened, I would love to try and resolve this in anyway that I can. Since I began working here my focus has been guest satisfaction and while occasionally there may be misunderstandings, my goal is for every visitor to leave happy. Please feel free to contact me at (630) 859-3434 ext 214 so that I can improve any future experience you may wish to have at SciTech Hands on Museum.

I’m embarrassed to admit that I’ve lived in the area my whole life and driven by hundreds of times without ever going in. Friends invited us to go with them and their kids and we had a good visit. Even our teen daughter enjoyed the morning. The staff is incredibly friendly and knowledgeable. The exhibits are interactive and fun. I can’t say enough about the quality of this museum.

Great hands on children's science museum! Very beautiful old school building with interactive exhibits. They also hold live demonstrations of experiments which are lively and informative. Can get a little overwhelming if a school field trip is visiting:) Would recommend for ages 3-12

It's a small museum with little descriptions on the science behind the object you're playing with. Lots of things were damaged, not working, worn down or just worth skipping over. I wouldn't go again if someone paid me. Not worth the time.
