Three of us were fortunate enough to spend half a day with Mandy getting to know the birds of Oahu and the history of the island. Mandy is personable, engaging, and very attentive to our birding level and tour goals. The birds were cooperative and the places that Mandy took us to to optimize the experience were beautiful. As an added bonus, she gave us amazing restaurant recommendations!

Excellent pelagic trip. We had only a few participants sign-up, but Hawaii Bird Tours still ran the trip and delivered with a superb outing. The crew worked hand-in-hand with the guides, attempting to hit the best locations and managing the changing itinerary. We got great looks at most species as the excellent guides not only called them out, but prepared us on what to look for in advance. I appreciated the experience of going with a small group. I would go again for sure.

What a fantastic guide Mandy is! Having been on many birding tours around the world with a variety of companies I would rate Mandy's birding skills, knowledge and organisation as one of the best.
Mandy is a passionate conservationist and her dedication to the preservation of highly endangered birds has to be admired. Her work ethic is second to none and she took great care to make sure that we saw the birds, sometimes in difficult circumstances in rain forest. She did not give up. Her knowledge of bird calls was excellent which alerted us to a bird's presence.
Mandy has a very out-going personality which made our trip fun and enjoyable. One aspect which I enjoyed after seeing as many endemic birds as possible was the other encounters with wildlife she afforded us. Mandy arranged a pelagic where we saw not only birds but Humpback Whales, Melon-headed Whales as well as visits to beaches where we saw Turtles and Monk Seals.
Perhaps I should mention food too ................I shall need to go on a very strict diet after this trip.........I blame Mandy entirely for all the weight I have put on! The food was delicious!

Hakalau Forest National Wildlife Refuge is a sanctuary for rare, endangered forest birds and their ʻōhiʻa and koa forest habitat found no where else in the world. Because of a disease killing ʻōhiʻa trees, a guided tour is the only way to visit the refuge. Pippa was an excellent guide for endemic birds, plants and conservation efforts in the refuge. She has a very good ear for bird calls which in many cases is the only way to find honeycreepers in the top of the forest canopy. She was able to find for our group the ʻākepa, ʻakiapōlāʻau, ‘alawi, o’mao, ‘elepaio, ʻiʻiwi and ‘apapane, explained how to tell them apart both visually and by song, and made sure that everyone in her group had a chance to see the bird and its field marks. After our visit to the refuge, Pippa made a last-minute detour to look for the pueo (which we found) and then made a list of the birds we saw and shared her list with us on e-bird. She also pointed out other birding hot spots that we could visit on our own. I really appreciate her skill and efforts.

My husband and I spent a day birding with Mandy on Maui. We had an incredible time and added 19 life birds to our list! These included several endemics we were really hoping to see, such as the i’iwi. We were also able to find additional new birds in the next couple of days given tips she shared with us. Mandy is super personable and was so fun to hang out with. She also taught us so much about the birds, their behavior and habitat, and even the history of Hawaii. I feel so lucky to have scored a tour with her! Highlight of our trip!

I spent two fantastic days on the Big Island birding with Mandy Talpas. It was an excellent experience all around! Mandy is very knowledgable about the birds, has a great ear, and knows where to find those elusive endemics. Not only that, but she is so personable, energetic, and fun to be with that you'll be sorry when the day ends. We spent a day in the Hakalau Forest and a second day on a pelagic off the Kona coast, and both days were extremely productive, well-organized and a lot of fun. I HIGHLY recommend Mandy for any serious birding adventure.

Five stars for Mandy Talpas and her 10-day, 3-island Hawaii birding tour that just wrapped up. Mandy found every one of the birds we targeted, shared her deep knowledge of and passion for Hawaii and its birds and habitats, and made the trip fun with her infectious personality. I recommend Mandy without reservation.

I was lucky enough to score a tour with Hawaii’s birding babe extraordinaire, Mandy, of Hawaii Bird Tours! We visited 5 different areas to find the corresponding birds, such as forest, wetlands, and the coast. I saw all the birds on my list and more! Mandy is so knowledgeable, not just about birds, but the flora, the fauna, and the history of Hawaii. I got a great informational and scenic tour of Oahu as well. The best part of it all is her enthusiasm and effervescent personality! I felt like I was with an old friend, laughing the whole time. I can not begin to express my gratitude for this spectacular tour! I had the time of my life!

Our family trip to the Hakalau Forest National Wildlife refuge to see the different Hawaiian bird species was excellent! Our guide Pippa was very knowledgeable of the birds and other local wildlife, and helped spot them all during the short hike. Awesome expedition - would recommend for bird lovers of any age.

Our experience on Kauai, looking for endemic birds was nothing but excellent! Our guide Maria was very knowledgeable and we thoroughly enjoyed learning all the different bird calls of the endemic birds and then the subsequent sightings were even more exceptional. Highly recommended and a great excursion!

Can you do a 1/2 day tour for 2 people with easy walking and washroom accessibility? Cost?
Is February a good time to bird on Oahu?
Thanks,
Lindy
